O Lord, do not let anyone harmed because of me
O Lord, do not let the remainder of my allotted life
meet You bearing the hateful sin of my doing.
Meet You with the evil, hateful part of my deeds.
وَاِجعلْand make مسيريmy journey إلىtoward لُقياكmeeting You يومon the day ترىYou behold
حشرَthe gathering of الأنامِall creatures علىalong نهجٍa path منamong السُّبُلِthe ways
And make my journey to meet You, on the day You behold
And let my journey to meet You, on the day You behold
all humankind assembled, follow a path among the ways—
The gathering of all creatures, follow a path among the ways,

a clear, level road where my foot refuses to stumble,
On a clear, level road, where stumbling is refused
with neither misstep nor straying there.
By my foot, so I neither falter there nor slip.

And grant me safety on a day when
And grant me safety on a day when
the hearts of Your creatures are cast into dread.
The hearts of Your creatures are cast into dread.
كمhow often ذاthis أُؤمّلI hope for عفواًpardon لستُI am not أكسبُهُearning it

ويلٌwoe لجلدِيَto my skin يومon the day of النّارِthe fire منbecause of أمليmy hope
How long shall I hope for pardon I do not earn?
How often I hope for pardon I do not earn!
Woe to my hide on the Day of Fire, for this hope of mine!
Woe to my skin on the day of fire, because of my hope!
وأُسْتَغَرُّand I am beguiled بماby what أمّلتُI hoped for تخدعنيdeceives me
لَيُّthe twists of الحوادثِevents إذْwhen أرْخَتْthey let out منsome of الطِّوَلِthe tether
And I seek Your forgiveness for what I hoped; I am deceived
And I am beguiled by what I hoped for; I am deceived by
by fortune’s turns whenever I let the tether run long.
The twists of events, when they let out the tether.

As though I—while fear’s fire-steels scorch me—
As though I, while fear's fire-strikers scorch me,
were unchanged by all that I fear and hope for.
With what I fear and hope for, were unconcerned.
قولٌspeech جميلٌfair وأفعالٌand deeds مقبَّحةٌmade ugly
ياO بُعدَdistance ذاthis القولspeech فيin الدّنياthis world منfrom العملِaction
My words are fair, but my deeds are vile;
Fair speech, and ugly deeds!
how far, in this world, are such words from action!
How far this speech in this world is from action!
ياO بُؤسَwoe للدّهرِto time غُرّwere deceived العالِمونthe learned بهby it

Alas for Time! By it the learned were deceived,
Woe to time! The learned were beguiled by it,
and all the ignorant too, in ages past.
And the ignorant alike, in earlier ages.
مَضوْاthey passed away جميعاًall فلاso no عينٌa person ولاnor أثرٌa trace

حانواthey perished وحالواand they changed وهذاand this الدّهرُtime لمdid not يَحُلِchange
They all passed away: not one is seen, not a trace remains.
They all passed away—not one remains, nor a trace.
Their hour came and they passed away; Time itself has not passed.
They perished and changed, while time itself has not changed.

As though, once they had mounted their funeral biers,
As though they, after mounting their biers,
they had never mounted the backs of horses and camels.
Had never ridden the backs of horses and camels.

They said, “You are free of all concerns.” I said to them,
They said, "You are done with your tasks." I told them,
“If only I were not engrossed in waiting for death!”
"Were I not busy awaiting death!"

شكٌّdoubt فأطمعso I might hope للدّنياfor this world ويطمعand hope might be held ليfor me
Indeed, I know with knowledge into which there enters
I surely know, with knowledge untroubled
no doubt—yet I desire the world, and it desires me—
By doubt that might make me hope for this world, or let hope be held for me,

that there is no escape from my journey’s destination,
That there is no escape from my journey's end,
and no cure for the ailments of which I complain.
Nor any remedy for the ailments I complain of.
