وراجعيand returning to me أتقاضىI demand الحزمَsound judgment بالزّلَلِthrough missteps
Will you leave me to counter despair with hope,
and return to me as I demand sound judgment through missteps?
لاdo not تحملنِّيforce me علىonto وعْرٍrugged ground فأركبُهُfor I will ride it
ولوeven if توسّمتَyou discerned منهin it طلعةthe face of الأجلِdeath
Do not drive me onto rugged ground, for I will ride it,
even if you discerned death's face in it.
ولاand do not تُعِلنّنيmake me drink again رَنْقاًmurky water فألفظُهُfor I will spit it out

Nor make me drink murky water, for I will spit it out,
even for a face that people deem worthy of kisses.

And preserve my silence for a deluded man, for whom I have propped
hope's back upon a leg of excuses.

Leave me, that my forbearance may sheath what my ambitions have drawn,
or else, here is my answer: take it from my spears.

If I do not leave you unable to recognize me when you meet me,
then may the hardest heads never yield to my swords,

nor may I carry lances on a day of battle,
and may horses' backs forsake me out of weariness.

Are you braver, or is Time, which makes peace with me
and cranes its neck toward my smile? Then leave my hope alone.

It offered me a span of time it once had made
a snare for capturing the valiant horseman,

ياO مالكاًyou who own مالكَthe master of الأرقابِnecks والدُّوَلِand kingdoms
and said, "Lead me toward whatever you wish; I will strive for it,
O you who own the master of necks and kingdoms!"
وماand not اِحتَفلتُI paid heed بشئٍto anything ظلّit kept يبذلهoffering it
لأنّbecause أكثرَmore منهthan that فيin يديّmy two hands ولِيand mine
And I paid no heed to anything it kept offering,
for more than that was in my hands and mine.
