How often a night traveler has slipped from us in death!

I weep in longing for him, and sob.

And I wish my side had never been stripped

From me, and no one had taken him away from me.

Thus too the generations passed from us, felled

By calamity given to excess and crooked fortune.

The world deceived them with the brilliance of its dye,

And glitter led them on in longing for it.

They reached for heights and reeled in death's hand,

And stood upright, then bent and grew crooked.

It is as though, once blinded by the darkness of

Their tombs, they had never shone or been radiant.

    وإليه يُمضي أو عليهِ يُعَرَّجُ

    They were not saved once death had entwined them;

Toward it one is driven, or to it one turns.

Such is Time: it fattens or makes lean

Throughout life, and saddens or brings joy.

And spares without afflicting, and keeps peace,

And makes truce without cutting down, yet stirs strife.

A man is either departing, or already there draws near

To him, without his knowing, the unsettling departure.

One moment you see him holding forth in the assembly,

The next you see him laid within the grave.

They bear him toward death throughout his span:

White days and black nights, like shambling riding camels.

And if death is the destination, why this grief

Of ours over wealth and a garment that wears out?

Were the fates not passing judgment among us

At random, the lame would not outstrip the healthy.

O announcer of Ibn Muhammad's death, would that what

You told me were wide of the truth.

You plainly announced—may you not prosper!—the news

That sets the heart flaring and blazing.

How often men have held back the like of what

You declared outright: they mumbled or stammered.

O you who leave me—after you I am left with

A heart aflame for you, fiercely burning.

How hard it is for me to see you clad

In death, buried in the earth and lowered

Into a dark chasm; for anyone who enters

It, through the returning nights, there is no way out.

Between me and you stands a height none can climb

For its sheer height, and a gate of death barred shut.

And those who seek you are turned away; they have

No way, ever, into the ravine where you dwell.

How many fingers of ours lie beneath the dust,

Dripping generosity, and the brow of a radiant face!

Where can I find each day a companion

Whom the intruder forcing entry will accept from me?

Vain hope! A daredevil fled from death

For a while, and a mail-clad warrior recoiled from death.

And I drank affection from you, unmixed and clear,

Yet how often we see affection adulterated and mixed!

Do not console me for him: consoling a man

For one his heart adores only inflames his grief.

How often my composure has hidden within my breast

Searing pangs that burn between my ribs!

Go, then, as fate has willed, and tomorrow be

Among those raised to lordship or crowned.

For them are dwellings in the courtyards of the Gardens:

Pleasant are those dwellings, and temperate the shade.

And may every cloud with riven kidneys water your dust,

Traveling by night whenever you wish it, or setting out at nightfall.

Within it thunder rattles and roars,

And lightning within it flares and ripples.

And blossoms spread wide along its edges,

And daisies on either side are gap-toothed.

And if God waters you with His mercies,

Then you are the happiest and most triumphant of those who come to Him.
