يَقولونthey say ليto me لِمْwhy أنتَyou للشّيبto gray hair كارهٌaverse
فقلتُso I replied طريقُthe road الموتِof death عندat مشيبيmy graying
They say to me, “Why are you averse to gray hair?”
I replied: the road to death lies in my graying.
قَرِبتُI approached الرّدىdeath لماwhen تجلّلَit covered مَفرقيmy hair's parting
وكنتُand I had been بعيداًfar منهfrom it غيرَnot قريبِnear
I drew near to death when it covered the parting of my hair,
though I had been far from it, nowhere near.
وكنتُand I was رطيبَfresh الغصنِof bough قبلbefore حلولِهِits arrival
وغُصنِيَand my bough لمّاwhen شبتُI turned gray غيرَnot رطيبِfresh
My bough was fresh before its coming,
and when I turned gray, my bough was fresh no more.
وَلَمand not يكُwas إلّاexcept عَنbecause of مَشيبthe graying of ذوائبِيmy locks
جَفاءُestrangement خليلٍa close friend وَاِزوِرارُand turning away حبيبِa beloved
It was only because my locks had turned gray
that a close friend grew distant and a beloved turned away.
وَماand not كنتُI was ذاpossessed of عيبٍa fault وقدand indeed صرتُI have become بعدهafter it
تُخَطُّare written down بأيديby the hands of الغانياتِbeautiful women عيوبيmy faults
I had no fault; yet after it I have become
one whose faults are written down by the hands of fair women.
فليسso it is not بكائِيmy weeping للشّبابِfor youth وإنّماbut rather
بكائِيmy weeping علىfor عُمْرٍa lifetime مضىgone by ونحيبيand my sobbing
So my weeping is not for youth; rather,
my weeping and my sobbing are for a life gone by.
