I have known—oh, would that I had not!

For life is bitter to those who know.

Here I am, throughout this time,

between burning anguish and sorrow, by turns.

For one departs, never to return,

and another passes, with none to take his place.

Time grants me no joy in those who remain,

nor does it bring back to me those gone before.

    Show me, if you can,

one who does not drink deep from the cup of death,

and one not held hostage to death’s summoner

when he calls him by name or cries aloud.

Time is nothing but a treacherous deceiver—

why, then, such passion and infatuation with it?

It is only like a flash of lightning,

and no more than the blast of a raging autumn wind.

Never have I seen a day, however grievous,

like the day of Kamal al-Sharaf’s death.

I seem, after parting from him

and the severing of those bonds of affection,

a traveler on a far journey, with

no provisions but remnants of kindness.

It gave me sleeplessness in place of sleep,

and replaced my light with darkness:

a parting after which there is no reunion,

an estrangement from which there is no turning back.

I sold you unwillingly at the price Time set,

    a cheated man’s sale—where is the recompense?

I reproached time’s vicissitudes on your account,

but whoever reproaches time wins no redress.

Death has snatched away all men,

but never snatched your like from among us.

You were ever unyielding of heart,

shielding yourself from humiliation with proud dignity,

free of disgrace, your garment untainted

throughout your life by stain or blemish.

    I shed tears—alas, how seldom

do shed tears restore what is lost.

From where can eyes gaze upon you,

while you lie behind veils in earth’s fine dust?

Depart, then, though we never tired of you; how many a departing man

has gone with hatred or loathing heaped upon him.

May your tomb among the graves be watered

with all the goodness and kindness you desired.

May the breeze never cease, from either side,

to revisit it, with meadows fresh and untouched.

in Paradise’s gardens, among the residents of those chambers,

    ويتّبعُ السّالفين الخَلَفْ

    dwelling beside your pure forefathers;

and those who come after follow those gone before.
