    فطالما صَمَّ عن العُذَّالِ

    Do not blame Time, nor reproach it;

For long has it been deaf to reproachers.

In every day that has passed of its vicissitudes,

One of us has his head grievously wounded by stones.

Nocking his arrows toward me is one

Who has been shown my vulnerable spot.

I am moved from low ground to its heights,

At times, and from high ground to the lowest.

As though I were a cloud of dust, cast

Into the palm of a mad north wind.

O Death, you have spared no lofty,

Radiant men, nor passed over the base.

    Felled by your cups, filled

To the brim with that deadliest draught.

How many a man seeking refuge has your hand drawn

From his stronghold, fearing no harm?

Where are the people who dwelt before us

On the summits of glory in former times?

Each with limbs starved of indecency,

Whose words were heeded in the gathering.

    As though his beaming countenance

Were a sword fresh from the polisher.

They were driven to death as are driven

The choice, saddled camels of dawn travelers.

And a bereavement came without warning,

Making me choke on cool, smooth-flowing water.

As though a man of note had made me drink,

By mentioning him, a cup of bitter colocynth:

    Indeed, Abu al-Fath has perished,

Through a crushing decree of fate sent down.

His loss has chipped away at my flint,

And when it cut, it cut at the joint.

    ربّ جروحٍ لَسْنَ بالأنصُلِ

    So now my heart is all one wound;

Many a wound is not inflicted by blades.

O Najm al-Ma'ali, this is an ordeal

In which every fearless man is revealed.

What a mighty boulder of it you have borne!

And burdens are carried by full-grown camels.

Do not look today upon its heat,

Scorching and fierce toward those who warm themselves.

But look at what it has left behind

Of blessings from the bountiful Giver.

Let Time be, which in the thicket has left us

Its lions, toying with the cubs.

Do not blame it while our heads

Are whole, if it wreaks havoc on our feet.

And for a sandhill lost to us there is solace,

If harm is warded off the mountains.

And bear it, a bitter darkness,

For before long it will clear away.

May its sharpened edge pass you by,

And your peerless, most perfect father,

Then your radiant sons—may you long enjoy

Their lives in ever better and better fortune.

So, for these immense blessings, turn aside

From the way of the grief-stricken, wailing man.

And refute the one who says,

"Time has been unjust and has not been fair."

If there is grief, let it come from a man

Who has spoken no evil and done none.

For grief is forgiven; were there no sorrow,

Patience would be neither good nor beautiful.

One who wakes amid blessings cannot escape

What greets him in his darkest night.

Nor can one dwelling in a town,

Lodging for a night, avoid departure.

Truly I am of you, through my love for you,

And my dwelling is amid your houses.

Whatever joy touches you touches me,

And any burning grief that strikes you is mine.

O departed one, whose return I cannot hope for,

Though we hope for travelers to return,

May the grave that hid you in earth be watered

By torrents of rain from dripping, streaming clouds.

And may your grave remain forever in a meadow,

    Scented with saffron and aloeswood.

May seasonal rainstorms visit its blossoms in turn,

Whether lingering with rain or clearing away.
