Do you not see the calamity that has come,
Do you not see the misery that has come
burdening my heart with the heaviest grief?
It has loaded my heart with the heaviest sorrow

I have been afflicted, and the unharmed man is bound, under
I have been afflicted, and peace depends
Time's decree, to be afflicted.
On the decree of fate that I be tried
مُجَرَّحاًwounded لاnot حاملٌcarrying جارحيmy wounder

Wounded—my wounder does not carry
Wounded, with no one to dress my wounds
a spear in his hand, nor a sword.
With his palm as a spear, or pull out the barbs
يُقرَعُis struck مَرْويmy flint بأكفّby the palms الرّدىof death

My flint is struck by the palms of death;
My marrow is drained by the palms of adversity
it daunts me before it descends.
Holding me back before I can descend

And if I contemplate the hour of death,
And if I reflect on the time of adversity
I see a pitch-dark night before it.
I see a night darker than the darkest night

As though I were night-blind, although I was not
As if I were blind though I am not
night-blind, from the calamity that left me bereft.
Blinded by the matter that has left me wretched
ياO بؤسَmisery للإنسانfor man فيin عيشهhis life

Alas for man in his life!
Oh the misery of man in his life
One after another is plucked from it.
Taken from him one by one

He goes far from his family, without having tired of them,
Distanced from his family though he did not dislike them
and is made to change his community, though he sought no change.
And exchanged the living for those passed on

While you see his home amid a throng,
Do you see amidst the abundance of his house
suddenly you see him on the soil of the open plain.
Until you see him in the barren wasteland
فقلso say لقومٍto a people زرعُهمْtheir crop قائمٌstanding

So tell a people whose crop stands:
Say to those whose crops still stand
Your crop must be mown down.
Your crops will inevitably be harvested

And tell whoever rejoices in his endowment:
And say to those enraptured with their wealth
The one who takes those he endowed has himself been endowed.
Bequeath to those who will take from the bequeathers
وقلْand say لماشٍto one walking فيin عِراصِthe courtyards الرّدىof death

أنسيتَhave you forgotten? مَنthe one who يستعثرmakes stumble الأرجلاthe feet
And tell one walking in death's courtyards:
And say to those traversing the plains of adversity
Have you forgotten the one who makes feet stumble?
Have you forgotten the one who trips up feet?

Time has fattened you, so you did not fear it;
Fortune fattened you yet you did not fear it
yet it fattens only those it makes lean.
Yet only those brought low have been fattened

If you find it giving a man a mount,
If it treats a man well when he is arrogant
it is the same you find making him dismount.
It is the one he will meet humbled

Or if it once shields him from abasement,
Or if it spares him from spending once
it is the same that returns to debase him.
It is the one he will return to, stripped bare

So do not let its glimmer deceive you:
So do not be fooled by its flash
no sooner does it shine on the horizons than it fades.
However it may gleam on the horizons until it fades

And do not believe a liar whose habit
Nor believe the habitual lies
is to lie in speech and deal in falsehood.
Of one whose way is to refute words and nullify

And we all drink death undiluted,
And we all sip the draft of adversity
whether after a long sojourn or hurried away.
Either prolonged of stay or hastened

What, then, is so alarming in a night-visitor
So why should one panic from a knock
who, if he misses one day, still grants no respite?
If it does not strike, how can it be postponed?

He announced to my heart the death of half of it;
It conveyed to my heart a piece of verse
his due is to swallow stones.
It deserves to be fed to the dogs

I said “You have not done well, O youth
Time has done neither well nor kindly.
But oh time, you have not been beautiful or just

Oh time, how often you move between us
one whom we do not wish to be taken away!
Those we had no desire to move

You take from us one by one

Nay, you take the best then the best

Yesterday you destroyed a brother of his;
Just yesterday you ended a brother of his
so look at your share—how abundant it is!
So look upon your gift, how plentiful!

صبراًpatience! فصبرٌfor patience غايةُthe ultimate goal المُبتَلىof the afflicted
Then you returned to consume what you had seized.
Yet you continue to destroy what you seized
Patience—for patience is the sufferer's final recourse.
Patience, so patience is the utmost of trials

They said: Find consolation today for one who is gone.
They said “Be distracted today from the departed”
I said: Away with a heart that forgets!
I said “Away! A heart cannot be distracted”

Do not blame the one wailing in grief for him;
Do not blame the bereaved for their sorrow
for the best of you is the one who aids the wailer.
For the best of you aide the bereaved

Suspicion never frequents his doors,
Oh absent one, were it not for adversity
nor, when alone, was he alone in wrongdoing.
It would not have been so long since I saw you

would not have stayed away from me so long.
And perhaps one robed will replace one who was robed

a meadow, its buttercups flourishing.

and the kindled fires are not for scorching them.
