لاdo not تطلبِseek الرّزقsustenance فيin الدّنياthis world بمنقصةٍat the cost of dishonor
فالرّزقُfor sustenance بالذُّلِّthrough humiliation خيرٌbetter منهthan it حِرْمانُdeprivation
Do not seek sustenance in this world at the cost of dishonor.
Seek not thy daily bread with abjectness lowly
For deprivation is better than sustenance gained through humiliation.
Better is death than life with dishonor foully
المالُwealth يمضيpasses away وتبقىand remain بعدهafter it أبداًforever
علىupon الفتىthe young man منهfrom it أوساخٌfilth وأدْرانُand stains
Wealth passes away, yet forever afterward there remain
Wealth passes away but aye its stains abide
Upon a young man its filth and stains.
On the proud soul that crouched for its sake so lowly
ماthere is no للفتىfor the young man فيin الغِنىwealth منfor ذِلّةٍhumiliation عِوَضٌcompensation
وليسand there are no فيin المالmoney للأعراضِfor honor أثمانُprices
Wealth offers a young man no compensation for humiliation.
Nor can the rich man's wealth for honor atone
And honor cannot be priced in money.
Honor and wealth are things between them wholly
