حللتَyou alighted بناwith us واللّيلwhile the night مُرْخٍletting down سُدولَهits curtains
فألّاwhy not, then? وضوءُwhile the light الصّبحِof dawn للعينto the eye مُشرِقُshining
You came to us while night let down its curtains;
why not, then, when dawn's light shines before the eye?
وزِدْتَand you increased مِطالاًdelay عنaway from لقاءa meeting مُصَحَّحٍreal
وأوْسَعَناand gave us plenty منكfrom you اللّقاءُthe meeting المُزَوّقُgilded
And you put off a real meeting still longer,
while a gilded meeting with you was lavished upon us.
فأَحْبِبْso, how dear بهhe is منas طارقٍa night visitor بعدafter هَدْأَةٍstillness
علىamid نَشوةِthe rapture الأحلامِof dreams لوif only كانhe were يصدقُspeaking truth
How dear a night visitor he is after stillness,
amid the rapture of dreams—if only he spoke true!
ولمّاand when تفرّقناwe parted ولمand not يكُthere was بينناbetween us
هُنالكthere لولاwere it not for النّومُsleep إلّاexcept التفرُّقُseparation
And when we parted—though nothing lay between us
there but separation, save for sleep—

رداءٌa cloak سحيقٌthreadbare أوor مُلاءٌa cloth مُشَبْرَقُtorn to shreds
a union that deceived us flew apart, as though it were
a threadbare cloak or a cloth torn to shreds.
