In your sweet saliva I have what makes wine needless,

And the light of your face is my lamp in the darkness.

And a redness spread across your cheeks, through which

You have seized the forelocks of rose and apple.

They have reproached me for my passion; so tell them

How the reproacher turned back, failing to win my obedience.

You blame me, though an anguish never leaves me,

Filling the space within my ribs, in a heart that finds no rest.

    وَما اِستَوى في الهَوى السّكرانُ والصَّاحِي

    And you are sober, yet reproach one who is drunk;

The drunken and the sober are not alike in love.

Rise, sing me tales of love to stir my rapture,

And give me my tears to drink, enough to fill my goblets.

And do not turn me toward one in whom I find no joy,

For in your right hand lie my sorrows and my joys.

And a turtledove upon a branch has saddened me,

Weeping without flowing tears, loudly lamenting.

Tell those who sought glory like mine:

How could you have white blazes and bright markings like mine?

Do you spend your nights anywhere but beneath my shelter's protection,

And under the guardianship of my swords and spears?

Who among you, when dispute grows fierce, possesses

Clarity and eloquence like mine in your defense?

Your scout in every noble pursuit would always have remained,

But for me among you, with a face bereft of radiance.

    لَم تَبلغوهُ وَعيسى غيرُ أطلاحي

    And I have reached an aim whose attainment was hard;

You have not reached it, and my pale camels are not worn out.

And how often affairs among you lay in disorder,

Until I turned the face of my reform toward them.

I have no pleasure save in noble deeds, nor

Any joy outside the valleys of kindness.

I defended you with what the smiths polish, while

You fended off evil with your palms, helpless against it.

My private and public conduct are alike in outward form,

And my concealment and my roaming are alike in this.

If your profit is wealth that will leave you,

My gains are nothing but the white hands of kindness.

I inherited these radiant virtues, to your exclusion,

From every noble sire, long of reach, a mighty chief.

A people who, when they mounted one day in haste,

Made the wide expanse grow narrow and filled every level plain.

You see their steeds in every battlefield,

Casting up broad stones from the earth with slab-like hooves.

They are seas to whoever regularly seeks their bounty,

While other people are but trickles and shallow pools.

    أو صاولوا النّارَ لم تظهرْ لقدّاحِ

    Were they to rival the star in height, it would rise over no one;

Or challenge fire, it would show itself to no fire-kindler.

Those are my people: bring me their like,

In a low-lying abode or a lofty, sunlit one.

Landmarks that the passage of time cannot wear away,

Nor need one fear anyone who would blot them out.
