Was it longing for you that kept me sleepless, then flared,
when our riding camels had crossed al-Nibaj?

And how did your phantom visit, at Dhat Irq,
the beds of youths who had entered the mountain passes?

It visited us by night, though we thought it would not
turn toward us, such was our affliction—yet it turned.

So it gave us the illusion of meeting, though there was none,
and whispered—if only its whispers had been true!

It alighted with us, though it had ridden no mounts,
nor traveled by night, nor made a predawn journey.

And one with thickly tangled tresses spent the late hours
giving me mouthfuls of his saliva.

His beauty shone for me, becoming—
while the wing of night lay shrouded—a lamp.

And one who claimed the desert folk's nobility
I tested, and found the basest man one could encounter.

His parents fed him pure, unmixed baseness,
and he added to it an admixture of conceit.

And a hand never stretched toward a good deed,
as though it had a cramp, though it was not cramped.

He denied me the slightest portion of my rights,

And I had argued with him plainly over them,
yet he gave no ear to argument.

He persists; how often has God brought low a man
who, in his headlong excess, mounted obstinacy!

and a crushing, arduous burden that cannot be resisted,
and a mute calamity with which none can confer.

camels or ewes in the lowland fields.

Who, then, will report to you on our behalf the calamities
at whose telling the listener is struck deaf?

Our enemies have mastered us in your absence,

So we hope for no guidance in our bewilderment,

And lions guard the grazing herd,
so we obtain neither milk nor offspring.

for an eloquent poet should not be challenged in satire.
