Say to the one who envies us in love—

and no one is free of an envier—

the gazelle has indeed visited me, he who has always

slipped free of the hunter’s noose,

on a night when one who stays awake, attaining

what he desires, is better off than the sleeper.

I said to him—and words about him

    draw rancor from the rancorous—

if only, when you were making me ill,

you had come with those visiting the sick to visit me.

    Indeed, the afflicted lover’s anguish

is his reproaching one who feels no love.
