سَلامٌpeace وَهَلand can ...? يُغنيavail السَّلامpeace علىupon الَّذِيthe one who
مَضىpassed هالكاًdead عنّىaway from me كَماas اِقتَرحchose الرَّدىdeath
Peace—but can a greeting of peace avail the one who
Peace—and can peace avail the one
has passed from me, perished, as Death saw fit?
Who passed from me in death, as death chose?
سَددتُI filled بهِwith him بَطنَthe belly of الصَّعيدthe earth وَإِنّهand indeed it
لَيُؤلمsurely pains قَلبيmy heart أَنْthat سَددتُI filled بهِwith him الثّرىthe soil
I filled the earth’s belly with him—and truly,
I filled the earth's belly with him, and indeed
it pains my heart that I filled the damp soil with him.
It surely pains my heart that I filled the soil with him.
وَعَنand out of غَيرِlack of إِيثارٍwilling choice عَمَرتُI populated بِهِwith him اللّوىthe winding sands
وَحَكّمتُand I gave authority to فيover أَوصالِهِhis limbs شِقّةَa strip of الرِّداthe cloak
With no choice of mine, I peopled the winding sands with him,
And not by choice I peopled the winding sands with him,
and gave a fold of the shroud dominion over his limbs.
And gave a strip of the cloak dominion over his limbs.
فَخُذْso take سِرَّthe secret of قَلبيmy heart مِلءَenough to fill كفّيكَyour two palms منof شجىًgrief
وَخُذand take جَفْنَthe eyelid of عَينيmy eye ملءَenough to fill كفّيكَyour two palms مِنof قَذىgrit
Then take my heart’s secret—both your palms full of heartache;
So take my heart's secret—both your palms full of grief;
and take my eye’s lid—both your palms full of smarting grit.
And take my eye's lid—both your palms full of grit.
فَبنْso depart غَيرnot مَملولٍwearied of فَكمfor many a بانَdeparted بائنٌdeparting one
مغافصةًsuddenly لاnot عَنfrom ملالٍweariness ولاnor قِلىhatred
Then go—not because you had grown tiresome; how many a one has gone
So depart, never wearied of—for many a one has departed
under a sorrow that strikes deep, not from weariness or hate.
Suddenly, not from weariness or hatred.
أَقولُI say وَقَدand already عَزّhas become difficult اِصطِباريmy patient endurance هَكَذاthus
أَرادَwilled مَليكُthe King of الأرضِthe earth أَوor هَكذاthus قَضىhe decreed
I say, now that patient endurance lies beyond me: Is this how—
I say, now that patience is hard for me: 'Thus
the Sovereign of the earth willed it, or is this how He decreed?
The King of the earth willed, or thus he decreed.'
