    Tempests, then crosswinds—

a hard ordeal, by your life!

    Tell him who is infatuated,

    besotted with this authority:

Do you not see her blundering,

    slipping at times and stumbling?

    She has faults; despite them,

    whoever loves her loves her.

    She has displayed herself; never

do veils conceal her from your eyes.

She draws near, withdraws, and appears

    there at times, then fades.

    And tears shed over her

    pour, drip, and stream.

    She is like a shepherd's rubbing-post,

with mangy beasts all around it.

There is relief in her, by your life,

    but its aftermath is anguish.

And how can peace be enjoyed

when war follows at its end?

Where can one find a faithful friend,

sweet to the taste and refreshing,

with no conceit in him, and yet

    one whom my heart admires—

like a sword that never glances off,

though swords glance off when striking,

and a steed that never stumbles,

though steeds stumble at a gallop?

    Beware, if ever

you love what does not love you.

And an udder with no flow of milk—

milking it is of no use.

    And sustenance reaches peoples,

even if one people goes without it.

    سِيّان مَشيٌ وَوَثْبُ

    No sustenance is secured by greed;

    walking and leaping are alike.

Many a bird has been barred from it,

while one that crawls has attained it.

    And slow walkers have gained

a share of it, while riders failed.

If the nights dealt fairly with us,

and there were a cure for the malady,

there would be no oppression or usurpation,

    nor extortion or plunder.

I swear by the House, circled

    by mighty, thick-necked chieftains,

who journeyed by night and were brought near it

by fine steeds and noble camels,

    disheveled and hungry, while beneath

    them were thirsty, hungry mounts.

What harm to it—while travelers cross

    wilderness after wilderness toward it,

    and the angels all around

    it rustle and draw near—

    if it wears no

brocade or striped cloth for the eye to see?

    مِنَ الدّماء وصبّوا

    And by what they shed

    of blood and poured forth;

and by those spending the night at Jamʿ,

theirs a burning heat and blaze,

who cut their ties away from themselves—

but what they truly cut away was sin:

I shall not buy abasement with honor

    while a keen blade is in my right hand;

nor shall any side of mine lie sleepless

    over what I have done;

nor shall I leave a tongue

to tell me, 'You are at fault.'

May my Lord abase a people

who have their draught of abasement.

They saw filth, yet cared not

about it; they shut their eyes and gulped.

They were led by a glimmer of gain,

as a gelded beast is led.

How long this persistence, while life

runs and trots away with us?

    So if I reproach Time,

    my reproach is wasted.

I graze on hopes all my life—

a barren pasture, by your life.

And there is no thrusting with the spear,

and no striking with the sword.

I seek, though the bough is no longer green,

what was when the bough was green.

And my head was once night,

with no shooting stars for the eye to see.

So now my night is dawn,

from which the lover turns away.
