What harm does my love do you, Hind?

And if I draw near to you, what harm does my nearness do?

Do not wonder at my infatuation with you:

For beauty, wherever you see it, awakens love.

And your dwellings—how could I leave them,

With my sweet pool or my pasture there?

And if I could, I would conceal my love for you,

Out of jealous reserve, from my heart and my companions.

And one strange thing is that I am forever

At peace with one who unjustly wages war on me.

How many a night, for your sake, I drank in company—while you lay in

The drowse of sleep—with the refuges of the bright stars,

Tossing in sorrow through all the night's darkness,

Like an asp, from side to side.

You do not know, while you rest in comfort,

Who spent the night because of you, embracing anguish.

And I wished to cease loving—strange indeed!

If only my heart, in love, were still my own!

And in me you rebuked one whose ear

Is deaf to censure and to reproach.

And if loving you is my sin, then never may

God forgive my sin, for you are my sin.

I fear my tongue, lest it reveal what

I complain of, in earnest and in jest.

For the tongue of one whose eloquence is known

Is sharper, when he speaks, than a keen-edged sword.
