Ah, weep for it, the mother of grief and calamities,

with torrents of tears, coursing by night and by day.

Defy whoever has not poured out his eyelids' water

for the loss of one departed, or in the wake of one gone.

Do not tempt me with patience, for patience has

no path to what lies in my heart and breast.

You blame me for my suffering while you remain unscathed,

though this bereavement has severed my withers, sparing you.

    فَلا تُبلِني فيهِ بلومِ المعاتِبِ

    I am afflicted by what has never afflicted you;

do not afflict me further with a reproacher's blame.

Nothing like this had touched me before,

nor had a mourner with grief like mine passed beside me.

A calamity that felled the lofty of Hashim's house

and shook a pillar of Lu'ayy son of Ghalib.

It passed the limbs by, taking only the head,

and would settle for nothing but necks and forelocks.

A bearer of death-news announced my soul's death, not knowing

he had announced it, and spurred my soul to beat my breast.

I did not soothe my inward burning and anguish

by striking my brow or gnawing my knuckles.

When he came telling me the truth, I wished,

against my own will, that he had lied to me.

My kinsman through true affection; a mere addition

to our love were the ties of blood between us.

It harms no man made close by affection,

an affection drawing us near, not to be among my kin.

When I lost him, I tore apart my patience

in mourning for him, not content with tearing my robes.

    When Muhammad al-Zaynabi died,

and the mounts' forelegs spread news of what befell him,

I shook my hands free of friends after him

and turned my side away from the house of brotherhood.

My tears sank into their ducts and no longer flowed

for the men and women who departed after him.

No one among all mankind can stir my hopes,

and no troubler among Time's children can trouble me.

My affection gathered itself together after him

and darted free, escaping the hands of suitors.

Never bring me near dwellings of joy,

and take me only to houses of mourning.

Who, then, hopes to endure, while we are in

Death's right hand, submissive, and the hands of ruin?

We are driven toward what we dread from every direction,

and turned from what we love as strange camels are driven off.

We are folded like striped cloaks into a pit,

filled in, beyond every fugitive's power to escape.

    وماضٍ إليها بالرّدى غير آئبِ

    One dwells there for all time, never departing;

another goes there through death, never returning.

We catch the sickness of death from those it has struck,

though death's contagion is unlike the contagion of the mangy.

No sunrise has found my skin free

    of the death-archer's unerring arrows.

    وَيَجرحُني مَن ليسَ لِي بمحارِبِ

    One I cannot see with my eyes chips away at me;

one who is not at war with me wounds me.

No survivor's safety has fooled me about death:

how many a survivor has a thousand dead around him!

If the days keep me alive after you to grieve

for you, while my sorrow overflows, never running dry,

then I am a bow with no arrows from you,

a battle-blade with no striking edges,

a fire with no one to warm, a guest without hospitality,

and a pitch-dark night without stars.

If the thorns of the qatad bush are not, in grief

for you, my bedding, then scorpions' raised tails are.

Death destroyed my family and annihilated my companions,

and scattered what bound me to my bands of kin.

My time has ravaged my tribe, and sometimes

it scatters what binds me to my companions.

Every day and night it has made me hear

the sobbing of weeping women or the wailing of mourning women.

It stripped my right hand of a brotherly bond I purchased

and laid up as a treasure, at the price of trials.

As though I were an old camel, subdued in its hands,

pulled toward hamstringing by the hands that tug it,

with a footpad gashed by every stone,

and a back worn down each day by a rider.

How strange that I laid you in the earth,

in a play-place among the southerly winds,

and pillowed you on loose dust after a time

when rising stars had been your pillow.

If you become hidden from us in the earth,

you are hidden only after revealing radiant virtues.

If you decay in darkness in the grave's depths,

you long made the blackness of deep shadows white.

If death has now barred you from speech,

you were always the foremost orator among the people.

The people were unjust: they left you in the earth

and went off to their pursuits and playgrounds.

    تَناءَوْا جَميعاً عن بعيدٍ مجانِبِ

    They did not shun you out of hatred;

they all drew away from one now distant and apart.

They deliberately laid you in the soil, and bade farewell,

against their will, to the finest of beards and brows.

If they have laid a hardship upon you, how often

you bore their back-breaking hardships for them!

If they offered you grief-stricken sobbing,

it was after you had aided them with your treasured wealth.

I lost you as I would lose my tongue when needing

to speak, or my sword on the morning of battle.

    وَإِلّا فإنّي غالبٌ كلَّ غالبِ

    Nothing overcame me but what visits every man;

    otherwise I conquer every conqueror.

How many a loss has made our eyelids run with blood,

though no usurper's right hand inflicted it upon us!

    فبِنْ بالمُنى عنّا وكلِّ المآرِبِ

    There is no desire in this world that you have not erased;

so depart from us, taking our hopes and every wish.

O departed one, who turned away and left behind

    sorrows upon me enough to fill my very sides;

who exposed me to danger after being my refuge,

and left me alone after being my companion!

    فما لي اِنتفاعٌ بَعدها بالمواهبِ

    You were given to us, then reclaimed by death;

what use have I for gifts after that?

If I am not dead as you are dead,

I have no share in life that anyone would desire.

If they have screened you from meeting me with earth,

they have set no screen before my grief for you.

Though you depart empty-handed of all wealth,

you have departed free of every fault.

In my heart is a fire from parting from you; would it were—

inescapable as it is today—al-Hubahib's fire.

Where can I find, after him, someone to replace him?

What substitute is there for clear, sweet water to a drinker?

    وخُولستُ أحبابي بها وحبائبي

    A youth whose absence has emptied the dwellings of my affection;

there I was robbed by stealth of my dear ones and beloveds.

He parted from me, not because his companionship had wearied me,

though many a clinging neighbor has wearied me.

My friend said, 'Your grief today is excessive,

as though sorrow were an inescapable decree upon you.'

By the lives of the women who reproach me, this is a calamity,

but it is unlike all other calamities.

You too have suffered what you have suffered; consider:

has its like ever passed among your misfortunes?

    فلستَ وما ثِقْلي عَليك بصاحبي

    Help me bear what afflicts me, or else leave me alone;

for you are no friend of mine—and how do I burden you?

Do not console me for what is gone with what you see:

the best of what my saddlebags held has been taken from me.

Had anything but death alone oppressed you,

we would have repelled it with bright, thin-edged swords.

There would have stretched toward it, from mighty men,

long of stride, the hands of spears and cleaving swords.

    وَإِن غَضبوا لم يَحفلوا بالعواقِبِ

    When they mounted, they never turned back from a resolve;

when angered, they paid no heed to consequences.

They fed the hungry swords and spears,

with thrusts and blows, on the flesh of battalions.

They were honored among people only by their rightful merit,

and advanced among their people only as was deserved.

They outdid every rival in generosity in times of drought,

and defeated every warrior in battle.

Peace be upon you, its downpour never ceasing,

pouring generously even when rain-heavy clouds withhold.

May your soil ever be dew-moistened and fragrant,

wafting rich perfume on every side.

If the winds touch your soil at all,

let it be the passing breath of weary, playful winds.

May God admit you to bliss, and may you be

in His gardens, only of lofty rank.
