لعلَّperhaps زَماناًa time بالثويَّةِat al-Thawiyya راجعُreturning
مَضىit passed وهوَyet it فيin قَلبيmy heart مَداthroughout الدّهرall time رابعُdwelling
Perhaps a time at al-Thawiyya will return;
it has passed, yet it dwells in my heart for all time.
تَذكّرتُI remembered نجداًNajd ذُكْرَةًa recollection فكأنّماand it was as though
تحمّلbore رَأسيmy head مائلُdrooping الرّأسin the head ظالعُlimping
I called Najd to mind, and it was as though
a drooping-headed, limping mount were bearing my head.

فَماso nothing هوit إلّاbut أَعظُمٌbones وأضالعُand ribs
The evening marches had gnawed its joints bare,
so it was nothing but bones and ribs.
وَكيفَand how بِنجدٍto Najd بعدafter أنّthat مطيَّناour mounts
تسادكُjostle together بالغَوْرينin the two lowlands منهof it الأكارعُthe lower legs
And how can we reach Najd, now that our mounts’
legs jostle together in its two lowlands?

They tread the hills with a drunkard’s tread; whenever
they descend the hills, the sandy flats stream with them.
خَليليّmy two friends هَلcan رَميُthe casting البلادِthe lands إِليكُماtoward you both
برَحْلِيَwith my saddle ممّاagainst what شفّنيhas wasted me اليومَtoday نافعُhelpful
My two friends, can the lands, by casting toward you
my saddle, ease what has wasted me today?
وَهلand is there ليfor me إِلىwith مَنthe one whom كنتُI used to أَهواهُlove him مِنكماfrom you both

وَقدand already حَرّمhave forbidden الواشونَthe slanderers جَدْواهhis favor شافعُan intercessor
And have I, in either of you, with the one I loved,
an intercessor, now that slanderers have forbidden his favor?
عَشِيّةَon the evening when أَغْرَواthey incited بِيagainst me العيونَthe spies وسطّرواand wrote down

That evening they set spies on me and wrote down
the longing that tears dictate on my behalf.
لَقَدtruly ضَلَّhas strayed قَلبٌa heart باتspends the night فيin كلّevery ليلةٍnight
يُصادِيcoaxes بُنيّاتِthe little daughters of الهوىlove ويصانعُand cajoles
Truly astray is a heart that spends every night
coaxing love’s little daughters and humoring them.
يَصدّit turns away ويَدنوand draws near بينَbetween يَأسٍdespair ومَطمعٍand hope
فلاso neither هوit وصّالٌsteadfastly attached ولاnor هوit قاطعُsevering ties
It turns away and draws near, between despair and hope,
so it neither keeps its bonds nor severs them.
فَقلso say لأسيلاتِto the smooth ones الخدودِin cheek أَتينناthey came to us
يخادعنthey seek to deceive منّيin me صاحباًa companion لاnot يُخادَعُis deceived
So tell the smooth-cheeked women who came to us,
seeking to beguile a companion in me who cannot be beguiled:
أَرَدْتُنّyou women sought قلبيmy heart للهوىfor love وهوwhile it مُتعَبٌweary
فإنّيso indeed I وقلبيand my heart اليومَtoday منكنّaway from you women وادعُat peace
You sought my heart for love when it was weary;
but today my heart and I are at peace, away from you.
وقدand already كنتُI had جرّبتُI tried الهوىlove وعرفتُهُand I knew it
فماso nothing فيهِin it إِلّاexcept ماwhat تجرّdrag along المطامعُdesires
I had already tried love and come to know it:
there is nothing in it but what desires bring in their train.
وَقولٌand words أَتانيcame to me مُعرباًexpressing عنof مودّةٍaffection

فَجاءَso it came كَماjust as كانتhad تَشاءُwished المَسامعُthe ears
And words came to me, expressing affection,
arriving just as ears had wished to hear.

كماas عَلِقَتْclung بالرّاحتينto the two palms الأصابعُthe fingers
Penetrating my heart, clinging to my thoughts,
as fingers cling to the palms.

Praise whose woven fabric thought itself adorned,
unlike embroidery embellished by craftswomen.

I seemed, when through my joints there coursed
its heady heat, to be drinking deep from a pool of wine.
فياso O عَلَمَbeacon of العلمlearning الّذيwho يُهتدىone is guided بِهِby him
كماas فيduring السُّرىnight travel تهديguide النجومُthe stars الطَّوالعُthe rising ones
O beacon of learning, by whom we find our way,
as rising stars guide travelers by night,
أَضَفْتَyou ascribed إلىَّto me الفضلَexcellence منكfrom yourself تفضّلاًout of generosity
وَأثنيتَand you praised عمداًdeliberately بالّذيfor what أنتyou yourself صانعُdo
you ascribed your own excellence to me, out of generosity,
and deliberately praised me for what you yourself had done.
وَألقَيتَand you laid مَنّاًa debt of gratitude فيin مديحٍpraise نَظَمْتهُyou composed it
علىupon كاهلٍa back لاnot تمتطيهride it الصّنائعُfavors
And in the praise you composed, you laid a debt of gratitude
upon a back that favors cannot ride.
ومثلُكand one like you منsomeone whom قدindeed كنتُI had been قبلbefore وصالهِhis friendship
أَحِنُّI yearn اِشتِياقاًwith longing نحوهtoward him وأنازعُand yearn restlessly
And one like you is someone for whom, before our friendship,
I yearned with longing and restless desire.
ولمّاand when رَآنيsaw me الدّهرُTime لاnot أَرتضيI accept لهfrom it
صنيعاًa favor وأكْدَتْand proved fruitless منهfrom it عنّيtoward me الذّرائعُthe means
And when Time saw I would not accept from it
any favor, and its avenues to me had failed,
سَقانيit gave me to drink بكَthrough you العَذْبَthe sweet الزُّلالَthe clear وإنّماand only
أطلْتُI prolonged الظّماthirst حتَّىuntil حَلتْgrew sweet ليto me المشارعُthe watering places
it gave me sweet, clear water through you; and I had only
prolonged my thirst until the watering places grew sweet to me.
وقدand previously كنتُI was لاnot أرضىcontent نصيباًwith a share أصبتُهُI gained it
وإنّيyet indeed I بقِسْميwith my share منof ودادِكyour affection قانعُcontent
I had never been content with any share I gained,
yet I am content with my share of your affection.
إِذاif ماever رعاكَwatches over you اللَّهُGod ليfor me بحفاظِهِwith His protection
فلستُthen I am not أُباليconcerned أنّthat غيركanyone other than you ضائعُlost
If God watches over you for me with His protection,
I care not that anyone else is lost.
وَماand not ضرّhas harmed منthose whom فارقتُI parted from منamong كلّevery نازحٍdistant person
وقدand already لفّhas knit together ليfor me شملاًa company بشملكwith your company جامعُa uniter
No harm has come from parting with all those far away,
now that a uniter has knit my company together with yours.
فدونَكso take قولاًwords جاءthat came عَفْوَthe spontaneity of بديهةٍfirst impulse
وَإنَّand indeed مقالاًspeech لوif تَعَمّدتُI composed deliberately واسعُhas wide scope
So take these words, which came in spontaneous inspiration,
and the scope for verse is vast, were I to compose deliberately.
