O my friend, if in my hardship you will not be

one to bear it in my stead, you are no friend of mine.

And had you not been the best of those whom

my fingertips have tested, I would not have clasped my fingers around you.

I have kept you in reserve for myself against calamities; and whoever is

a truly faithful friend is a treasure against calamity.

And what harm is there—when the closeness that unites us

is our affection—that you are not among my kin?

Protect me, either with sharp swords and spears,

or with counsel, if calamity encamps beside me.

And be my torch if people are my darkness,

and be true to me if my time is false to me.

And rise and spare me—if you can do this—

from alighting, vanquished, in the valley of wonders.
