    Ah, many a night we attained our heart’s desire,

    as though its beginning, in this, were its end.

    As though the Pleiades’ star wearied of our gathering,

    so it could not bear to stay and watch it.

    And many a wilderness I crossed alone upon a restless steed,

    whose hoof had accustomed me to plunging into the sea.

    From its color night draws its darkness,

    and from its face dawn’s armies shone forth.

    Embracing a brown nabʿ-wood lance, never borne

    save for a day that only the bold confront.

    Nor has its hand ever cleft a throat and left it

    save with its sinews laid open.

    And a companion whose cutting edges never failed

    in any crisis, whose perils none could feel safe from.

    It stands upright, longing for necks,

    of its own accord, before its wielder grows eager.

    فما يضيق لمرهوبٍ يُخامرُهُ

    And I have a heart as though the earth were its courtyard;

    so it never shrinks at any terror that assails it.

    فكلُّ ما حلّ فيه فهو حاقرُهُ

    It deems scant the abundance this age has for it;

    so whatever lodges within it, it holds in contempt.
