An apparition of Umayma came visiting by night,

though al-Liwa and al-Abariq lay in the way of its night journey.

It visited us; we knew not how it came,

though hindrances had long kept it from us.

Praise God for what sleep bestowed in a deep darkness

forsaken by bright stars, rising and flashing!

We delighted in it until our meeting seemed—

though nothing but utter falsehood—to be real.

For never did it visit me by night but our dawn

drew forth against us its keen, white swords.

How, then, did you choose night, when night confounds,

and truths in it elude both us and you?

You make me imagine nearness, while you are far away,

and make me fancy union, though you are the one who parts.
