قل لعينيَّ لا تَمَلّا الدّموعا

قل لعينيَّ لا تَمَلّا الدّموعا

تارةً أدمعاً وأخرى نجيعا

تارةً أدمعاً وأخرى نجيعا

Tell my two eyes: do not tire of tears,

Tell my eyes, do not brim with tears

now tears, and now fresh blood.

Sometimes tearful, other times wailing

ودعا الفكرَ في الهجوع فيأبى

ودعا الفكرَ في الهجوع فيأبى

لكما الرُّزءُ أنْ تذوقا الهجوعا

لكما الرُّزءُ أنْ تذوقا الهجوعا

Abandon thoughts of sleep, for bereavement denies

Leave thinking in grief though it refuses

you both the taste of slumber.

How much grief can you both taste

إنّ هذا الخطبَ الفظيعَ وما شا

إنّ هذا الخطبَ الفظيعَ وما شا

هَدتُما من سواه خطباً فظيعا

هَدتُما من سواه خطباً فظيعا

This indeed is the dreadful calamity; never have you two

This terrible affliction, nothing else

witnessed another calamity so dreadful.

You have seen is as terrible as it

أيّها الآملُ الحياةَ وما يخ

أيّها الآملُ الحياةَ وما يخ

شى غروباً كما يرجّي طلوعا

شى غروباً كما يرجّي طلوعا

O you who hope for life, and do not

O hopeful of life, fearing

fear its setting as you hope for its rising;

Sunset as you hope for sunrise

والّذي يرفع القصورَ كأنّ الد

والّذي يرفع القصورَ كأنّ الد

دهر أعفى بناءَه المرفوعا

دهر أعفى بناءَه المرفوعا

and you who raise palaces, as though

He who raises palaces as if

time had spared your lofty building:

Time has spared its tall buildings

قد رأينا كما رأيتَ عليّاً

قد رأينا كما رأيتَ عليّاً

في الثُّريّا حلّ الترابَ صريعا

في الثُّريّا حلّ الترابَ صريعا

we have seen, as you have, one once exalted

We saw as you saw Ali

among the Pleiades lie fallen in the dust.

Wrapped in dust, a lifeless corpse

لا تخفْ إنْ حَييتَ غيرَ المنايا

لا تخفْ إنْ حَييتَ غيرَ المنايا

وَإذا ما علوتَ إلّا الوُقوعا

وَإذا ما علوتَ إلّا الوُقوعا

Fear nothing, while you live, but death,

Fear not if you live unlike death

and, when you rise, nothing but falling.

And if you rise, only to fall

وإلى كم تكون في هذه الدُّن

وإلى كم تكون في هذه الدُّن

يا أسيراً معلَّلاً مخدوعا

يا أسيراً معلَّلاً مخدوعا

And how long will you remain in this world,

For how long will you be in life

a captive, lulled with promises and deceived?

Ill-fated and tricked, a captive?

هل ترى إنْ رأيتَ إِلّا خِداعاً

هل ترى إنْ رأيتَ إِلّا خِداعاً

وسراباً في كلِّ قاعٍ لموعا

وسراباً في كلِّ قاعٍ لموعا

Do you see, if you look, anything but deception

Do you see, if you see, other than guile

and a mirage gleaming in every plain,

And mirage in every barren valley?

ولباساً متى تشاء الليالي

ولباساً متى تشاء الليالي

كان عنّا محوَّلا منزوعا

كان عنّا محوَّلا منزوعا

and a garment that, whenever the nights so wish,

And a garment, whenever nights wish

is removed from us and stripped away?

Was from us, changed and removed

لا تكنْ في البقاءِ والدّهرُ يُفني

لا تكنْ في البقاءِ والدّهرُ يُفني

ك صباحاً وفي المساءِ طَموعا

ك صباحاً وفي المساءِ طَموعا

Do not covet survival, while time wears

Be not in remaining when time destroys you

Like morning, and in evening twilight

لم تدعْ حادثاتُ هذِي اللّيالي

لم تدعْ حادثاتُ هذِي اللّيالي

عندنا تابعاً ولا متبوعا

عندنا تابعاً ولا متبوعا

The calamities of these nights have left

The events of these nights left

among us neither follower nor followed.

No followers or followed among us

ولو اِنّي أنصفتُ نفسي لصيّرْ

ولو اِنّي أنصفتُ نفسي لصيّرْ

تُ سلامي على الورى توديعا

تُ سلامي على الورى توديعا

Had I been fair to myself, I would have made

If I were fair to myself, I would make

my greeting to mankind a farewell.

My farewells to people departure

يا خليليَّ غنّياني بتذكي

يا خليليَّ غنّياني بتذكي

ري الرزايا وسقّياني الدّموعا

ري الرزايا وسقّياني الدّموعا

O my two friends, sing to me, reminding

My friend, remind me of misfortunes

me of calamities, and give me tears to drink.

And let me drink tears

واِسمعا مثلما سمعتُ من الأي

واِسمعا مثلما سمعتُ من الأي

يامِ هذا التّخويفَ والتّرْويعا

يامِ هذا التّخويفَ والتّرْويعا

And hear, as I have heard from the days,

And listen as I listened to days

this warning and this terror.

Threatening and frightening me

وإذا لم تدعْ صروفُ اللّيالي

وإذا لم تدعْ صروفُ اللّيالي

لي أُصولاً فكيف أرجو فروعا

لي أُصولاً فكيف أرجو فروعا

And if the turns of the nights have left

If the nights' turns left me no

me no roots, how can I hope for branches?

Roots, how can I hope for branches?

أين قومٌ كانوا على الليل صُبحاً

أين قومٌ كانوا على الليل صُبحاً

لا يُوارى وفي الجدوبِ ربيعا

لا يُوارى وفي الجدوبِ ربيعا

Where are those who were a dawn against the night,

Where are the people who were at night a morn

never hidden, and a springtime amid droughts?

Whose glow was never veiled, and in droughts, spring?

أين من كان للرّدى طارداً بال

أين من كان للرّدى طارداً بال

بأسِ عنّا وبالنّدى ينبوعا

بأسِ عنّا وبالنّدى ينبوعا

Where is he who repelled death

Where are those who drove away evil

from us with valor, and was a fountain of bounty?

From us with might, and with dew were fountains?

فَتراهمْ من بعدِ عزٍّ عزيزٍ

فَتراهمْ من بعدِ عزٍّ عزيزٍ

في بطون الثّرى جُثوماً خُشوعا

في بطون الثّرى جُثوماً خُشوعا

Yet you see them, after mighty glory,

You see them, after dear mighty power

in the earth's depths, crouching and humbled.

In the earth's laps, humbled, submitted

ليتَ دهراً أعطى وعاد إِلينا

ليتَ دهراً أعطى وعاد إِلينا

مُسترِدّاً لذاك كان منوعا

مُسترِدّاً لذاك كان منوعا

Would that time, which gave and then returned to us

I wish fate restored and gave back

to reclaim its gift, had withheld it!

That which it deprived, to us

وإذا لم يكنْ سوى الموت فالما

وإذا لم يكنْ سوى الموت فالما

ضي بطيئاً كمن يموت سريعا

ضي بطيئاً كمن يموت سريعا

And if there is nothing but death, then one who departs

If nothing remains but death, then slow

slowly is like one who dies swiftly.

Death is like sudden death

قل لناعي أبي عليٍّ ألا لي

قل لناعي أبي عليٍّ ألا لي

تَ الّذي قلت لَم يَكن مَسموعا

تَ الّذي قلت لَم يَكن مَسموعا

Tell the bearer of news of Abu Ali's death: ah, would

Tell my father Ali's mourner: Do not

that what you said had never been heard!

Say what you said was never heard

إِنّ رَوْعاً ألقيتَ في الرُّوعِ مِنِّي

إِنّ رَوْعاً ألقيتَ في الرُّوعِ مِنِّي

يوم خبّرتَ لم يدعْ لِيَ رُوعا

يوم خبّرتَ لم يدعْ لِيَ رُوعا

The terror you cast into my heart

You have cast terror in me

the day you told me left me without my senses.

When you told what left me no tranquility

سلِّ غيري فليس كلُّ جَزوعٍ

سلِّ غيري فليس كلُّ جَزوعٍ

عضّه الرُّزءُ كان مثلي جَزوعا

عضّه الرُّزءُ كان مثلي جَزوعا

Console another: not every mourner

Question another, not all bereaved are

bitten by bereavement has been as distraught as I.

Afflicted by woe like me, bereaved

لم أكنْ قانعاً بشيءٍ من الدّه

لم أكنْ قانعاً بشيءٍ من الدّه

ر وعُلِّقْتُهُ فصرتُ قَنوعا

ر وعُلِّقْتُهُ فصرتُ قَنوعا

I had been content with nothing from time,

I was content with nothing in life

but I grew attached to him, and became content.

I hung it up and so became content

كانَ تِرْبِي وَصاحِبي وإِذا ما

كانَ تِرْبِي وَصاحِبي وإِذا ما

خِفتُ حصناً من الخطوب منيعا

خِفتُ حصناً من الخطوب منيعا

He was my age-mate and companion, and whenever

He was my soil, my companion, and whenever

I feared, an impregnable fortress against calamities.

وَلَهُ الذّكرُ خالداً كلّما أُخْ

وَلَهُ الذّكرُ خالداً كلّما أُخْ

لِقَ ذكرٌ سواه عاد نَصوعا

لِقَ ذكرٌ سواه عاد نَصوعا

His remembrance is everlasting; whenever

His memory is eternal - whenever another

another memory fades, his shines bright anew.

Is remembered, it returns blunted

وَحَياتي مثلُ المماتِ إِذا فا

وَحَياتي مثلُ المماتِ إِذا فا

رَقْتُ من كان لِي جَناباً مَريعا

رَقْتُ من كان لِي جَناباً مَريعا

My life is like death, now that I have parted

Without him I love, my life resembles death

from one who was for me a verdant refuge.

When we were separated, a part of me torn

أيُّ مَلْكٍ في عصرنا لم يكن لم

أيُّ مَلْكٍ في عصرنا لم يكن لم

ما دَهاك الرّدى بك المفجوعا

ما دَهاك الرّدى بك المفجوعا

What king in our age was not,

What king in our time was not

when death struck you, bereaved by your loss?

Struck down by fate - it made you desolate

أنتَ أوسعتَهمْ وقد أعْضَلَ الخَطْ

أنتَ أوسعتَهمْ وقد أعْضَلَ الخَطْ

بُ مقالاً كفاهُمُ وصنيعا

بُ مقالاً كفاهُمُ وصنيعا

You amply supplied them, when the crisis grew grave,

You aided them, and calamity uttered

with words that sufficed them, and with good deeds.

Words enough for them and deed enough

كم أصاخوا إليك والرأيُ شورى

كم أصاخوا إليك والرأيُ شورى

وأجابوا نداءَك المسموعا

وأجابوا نداءَك المسموعا

How often they gave ear to you when counsel was shared,

How they screamed to you, judgment is consultation

and answered your heeded call.

They answered your call heard

ما أبالي إذا حفظتُ عهوداً

ما أبالي إذا حفظتُ عهوداً

لصديقي مَنْ كان غيري مُضيعا

لصديقي مَنْ كان غيري مُضيعا

I care not, if I keep my pledges

I do not care if I keep a

to my friend, who else proves faithless.

Promise to my friend, though none other does

قد عَمِرْنا كما نشاءُ اِشتراكاً

قد عَمِرْنا كما نشاءُ اِشتراكاً

وَاِشتِباكاً وَصَبوةً ونزوعا

وَاِشتِباكاً وَصَبوةً ونزوعا

We lived as we wished, in fellowship

We have lived, sharing

and close union, youthful passion and yearning.

And mingling, gathering and dispersing

وَاِمتَزَجنا حتَّى جَعلتك لمّا

وَاِمتَزَجنا حتَّى جَعلتك لمّا

غِبتَ عن مقلتِي لجدِّي ضجيعا

غِبتَ عن مقلتِي لجدِّي ضجيعا

We were so closely joined that, when

Until I made you, when you were

you vanished from my sight, I laid you beside my grandfather.

Absent from my eyelids, my companion in sleep

في مكانٍ تأتي ملائكةُ الل

في مكانٍ تأتي ملائكةُ الل

هِ إِليه عشيّةً وهزيعا

هِ إِليه عشيّةً وهزيعا

In a place visited by the angels of

In a place angels of God

God at evening and in the watches of the night.

Come to, evening and morn

وإذا ما دعوتَ ربَّك فيه

وإذا ما دعوتَ ربَّك فيه

وسألتَ العظيمَ كان سميعا

وسألتَ العظيمَ كان سميعا

And when you call upon your Lord there

If you call your Lord there

and petition the Most Great, He hears.

And ask the Almighty, He hears

وجوارٍ لمن إذا كنتَ موقو

وجوارٍ لمن إذا كنتَ موقو

ذاً من السّيّئاتِ كان شفيعا

ذاً من السّيّئاتِ كان شفيعا

And near one who, if you are stricken

And a neighbor - when you stand

by sins, will intercede for you.

Cleansed of evil deeds - who intercedes

فهنيئاً بأنْ سكنتَ رباعاً

فهنيئاً بأنْ سكنتَ رباعاً

كنّ للغُرِّ آل موسى ربوعا

كنّ للغُرِّ آل موسى ربوعا

So blessed are you to have settled in dwellings

So congratulations, you settled quarters

that housed the illustrious family of Musa.

We passed on to Moses' folk abodes

وإِذا لم يكن لهمْ يومَ حشرٍ

وإِذا لم يكن لهمْ يومَ حشرٍ

روعةٌ تُتقى فلستَ مَروعا

روعةٌ تُتقى فلستَ مَروعا

And if, on the Day of Gathering, they have

If they have no fears the Day they are

no terror to dread, neither will you be terrified.

Resurrected, you will not be fearful

وإذا ما شفاهُهُمْ كرِعَت ثم

وإذا ما شفاهُهُمْ كرِعَت ثم

مَ زُلالاً أصبحتَ فيه كَروعا

مَ زُلالاً أصبحتَ فيه كَروعا

And when their lips drink there

When their lips are parched, then you will be

of pure water, you shall drink deeply of it.

In it, sated with water pure and plentiful -

وَسقى اللَّهُ تُربةً أنتَ فيها

وَسقى اللَّهُ تُربةً أنتَ فيها

زَجِلاً بالزّلال كان هَموعا

زَجِلاً بالزّلال كان هَموعا

And may God water the soil in which you lie

God watered soil you are laid to rest in, saturated

with resounding rain, pouring pure water.

With pure drink was once burning thirst
