    خوفاً عليه قَلَقِي

    and you, toward whom alone

    my anxiety turns, in fear for you;

and you who shun me at daybreak

and visit me in night's darkness:

can your sweet water help me, O

sweet one, when it makes me choke?

It came to us while slumber

    drew my neck toward itself.

How wondrous a visit it was,

from one so harsh, never gentle!

    Illusory, as though it came

there from one who keeps his word.

As though longing had led it,

though it was like one who felt no longing.

I spent the night with that illusion,

sustaining my last breath through it.

through hope he had not failed,

    and piercing every throat

with a blue point from a tawny spear.

each one a rider into the

terror on the backs of fleet steeds,

    and charging with a host,

on battle's day, against a host.

    Each day he mounts

the back of glory, climbing higher,

    as though, out of generosity,

he had never been outstripped in giving.
