You endured, and one like you does not succumb to grief.

And your capacious breast bore its burden.

And you consoled your soul, once you knew

That consolation would benefit it more.

And you treated your ailment when you saw

Your physician's medicine was of no avail.

And when time's injustice deprived you of your due,

You were content, though not one to be content.

And you told your eyes, "Shed no tears,"

So the eye neither streams nor weeps.

And you did not complain of what the ribs had buried,

Though their depths held torment and pain.

If the calamity that time has brought is hideous,

Then complaining of it is more hideous still.

And none but those who gloat benefit

    When the suffering man complains.

And when you rose to fend off calamities,

You accepted what could not be averted.

Long have we known you steadfast in your stance,

Even when the raging gale blows.

And why not, when in hardship you are the man

To whose counsel we always turn?

And the fury of calamities has learned

That your rock cannot be split,

And that your lush growth cannot be mown,

And that your summits cannot be scaled.

And should men's forbearance be exhausted,

Your forbearance would be their refuge.

Such is time: it tears down what it builds,

Openly, and reaps what it sows.

    وإن يعطنا فبما يمنعُ

    If it heals us, it is through prolonged sickness;

And if it gives to us, it is through what it withholds.

We are the earth's children, yet it treacherously slays us,

And devours us, then is never sated.

One dwelling is choked with its inhabitants,

While another like it lies desolate for us.

And what is to come arrives, though we never summoned it,

And what is past goes by and never returns.

And I am part of you: whatever befalls you

Befalls me, and strikes upon my flint.

And how can we be set apart,

When all-embracing ancestral honor unites us?

And above the heads of men we are raised

By a lair teeming with beasts of prey, ours and not theirs.

And we are entwined about the Messenger's root,

So you spring from it, just as I do.

How many an eloquent orator we have,

And how many a convincing scholar we have!

And when I drank of you rather than all mankind,

I was quenched, and the drinking-place was sweet to me.

The loss of women is like the loss of men:

It cuts when it cuts, or severs outright.

And wrong was he who said that women

Are fit for loss, or its proper objects.

May the bond between us ever be like gardens

Lavishly watered by clouds pouring rain.

And may I never, as time passes, be saddened on your account

By what I see, nor troubled by what I hear.
