عليلُailing one ولاand does not يرجوhope for الشفاءَhealing عليلُill
Your ailing one hopes for healing; only the
The lovesick man hopes for recovery, yet
ailing one who hopes for no healing is truly ill.
The lovesick man has no hope for healing.
إذاif كانis دائيmy illness بالهوىfrom love وهوand it is قائلٌspeaking
فإِنّthen indeed أُساتيmy healers فيamong الرّجالِmen قليلُfew
If my illness comes from love—and it speaks—
If my sickness was for love, and he's saying:
then my healers among men are few.
Then my peers among men are few.
وماand not بيin me إلىto أنْto أكتمconceal الحبlove حاجةٌany need
وفيand in كلّall أحوالِيmy states عليهof it دليلُevidence
And I have no need to conceal my love,
I have no need to conceal love
and every state of mine bears witness to it.
And my every state reveals proof of him.
فهلso, is there لِيfor me إلىto أنْto يبرحَleave الحبُّlove مهجتِيmy soul
كماas لمdid not يكنbe فيهاin it الغَداةَthis morning سبيلُa way
Is there a way for love to leave my soul,
Can love ever leave my soul
this morning, as though it had never been there?
As though it had never found a way in at dawn?
كأنّيَas though I لمّاwhen أنْthat (connective) ذكرتُI recalled فراقَكمْparting from you
تمشّتْcrept بعقليthrough my mind فيamong الصُّحاةِthe sober شمولُwine
It was as though, when I recalled parting from you,
It's as if, when I recalled your parting,
wine crept through my mind among the sober.
Sorrows walked into my mind at dawn,
فماso not أنَاI عنfrom شكوىlamenting الصّبابةِardent longing ساكنٌdesisting
وإنْand if أشكُهاI lament it لمdid not أدرِI know كيفhow أقولُI speak
So I do not cease lamenting my longing,
So I do not stop complaining of passion
yet if I lament it, I know not how to speak.
And if I complain of it, I know not what to say,
وسِيّانand alike عنديto me قبلbefore بَلْوايَmy affliction بالهوىwith love
أضنّwhether he withheld ضَنينٌa miser أمor أنالَgave مُنِيلُa giver
And before love afflicted me, it was all one to me
And before my affliction with love, I see no difference
whether a miser withheld or a giver gave.
Between writhing in anguish or enjoying union,
وَماand not العزُّdignity إلّاexcept سلوةٌsolace لاno هوىًlove بهاin it
وكلُّand every أسيرٍcaptive بالغرامِof passion ذليلُabased
And dignity is only solace untouched by love,
Glory is but a consolation without love,
and every captive of passion is abased.
And every love captive is disgraced.
