Is gray hair anything but a choking lump in the breast,

and a sickness to the tender ladies of curtained chambers?

When they see it, they turn aside from its path,

as drunkards recoil from foul food.

I donned it as a turban after youth, resentfully,

and gray hair's whiteness was the worst of my turbans.

And I was veiled by it in terror, as though

I had wrapped myself in the speckled serpents of its locks.

It made me fear it, as one who turns aside

toward the thickets fears the terrors of mighty lions.

And every day and night I was threatened

by its flashing radiance with crushing calamities.

It took the place of my reproachers over youth's rapture,

and gave the rebuke I had loathed from my censors.

Every pleasure's reach fell short of me,

and every intimate companion's steps stopped short of me.

By God, I cannot tell: were my hair-partings struck

by gray age's stone, or a stone-flinger's stone?

When Time gave it to me to drink, I drank it

as a captive is forced to swallow bitter colocynth.

Its bending afflictions bowed me, as though

even standing all day, I were not upright.

And now I am thought slow to rise, and they claim—

falsely of me—that my resolve has faltered.

So I am not invited to a day of merriment,

nor am I looked to on a day of strife.

So do not ask me, you two, to face a warrior,

for I wear only the garb of a man of peace.

Nor use me to shield you both from a tyrant's violence,

for I am in gray age's tyrannous hands.

If I could heal the wounds of you both, never would

your eyes see on me the wounds that calamities inflict.

Gray age has wounded my skull; leave me, you two,

and seek no treatment from me for wounds to the skull.

Gray hair like dawn's rift, its whiteness overtopping

the mantles of pitch-black, fierce nights.

And its stars rise on the horizon of youth,

as brilliant stars rise amid the clouds.

Because of it, whenever I seek to rise

toward pleasure, my steps seem bound in black irons.

Hands support me, though for a time I was

self-sufficient, needing no support from props.

And I cower in submission before a petty trouble,

though once I drove back the onrush of great calamities.

And once I fiercely resisted anyone who tugged at me,

but when gray hair covered me, my bridle-bits grew pliant.

And when its shadow overtook me and I bore it,

I deliberately grew accustomed to bearing wrongs.

So let my head not toss toward glory, now that

it has been shrouded by gray age, the humbler of skulls.

O dye I was made to bear unwillingly,

and O dye substituted for one I had not tired of!

And O visitor whom I never invited,

as a young man's breast is visited by keen spearheads!

Stay; do not leave me, though you are not what I desire,

for often we have resented losing what did not suit us.

Who will give me its darkness in place of its dawn,

and who will trade me dark hairs for its white?

And who will bear its burden for me this morning,

though once I readily shouldered the weight of debts?

O white hairs, white hairs of my head, may I return

to the black hairs, your coal-black opposites?

They fled afar before the rising white hairs,

as daybreak scatters a sleeper's dreams.

O dawn of my head, is there, to the night of desire,

a path, and a way back to bygone nights that still endure?

Nights when souls were offered for my ransom and I robed myself

in white wrists, through the favor of fair women.

If my loss of youth is inevitable,

then lifelong grief for it is a stroke I cannot escape.

And if my lament and tears bring no healing,

then the tears of rain suffice, and the mourning of doves.
