By your life, how fiercely my suffering burns! Yet
By your life! The one I love did no wrong;
despite our hearts’ preoccupation, we are afflicted with one unconcerned.
Rather, we have been afflicted by preoccupying hearts with emptiness.
ويبلغand he obtains مِنِّيfrom me ماwhatever يشاءhe wishes منof الهوىlove
وماand not أناI شيئاًanything منof هوايmy desire ببالغِattaining at all
And he obtains from me whatever love he desires,
He takes from me what he wants of passion,
while I attain nothing of what I desire.
And I am nothing against his passion's violence.
يُراوغنِيhe evades me عنfrom وصلِهِunion with him طولَthroughout عمرهِhis life
وَأَينand where اِنتفاعٌbenefit بالخَدوعِfrom the deceitful one المراوغِthe evasive one
All his life he evades me, withholding union with him;
He eludes me from union with him for a lifetime;
and what benefit is there in one deceitful and evasive?
Where is the use in subtle, elusive guile?
ويقلبُand it turns جنبيَّmy two sides الهوىlove كلَّevery ليلةٍnight

And love tosses me from side to side every night
Passion tosses my side every night
upon embers or venomous stings.
On embers or burning coals of vipers.
