    ولا رددتُ بغير النُّجْحِ سُؤّالي

    By God, may I never possess wealth I am loath to give,

    Nor turn my petitioners away without success;

    Nor store up anything but generosity and noble deeds,

    Treasures over which I have never passed the night in fear.

    Wealth is mine when, one day, I give it freely,

    And what I leave behind me is not my wealth.

    And tomorrow I shall lie buried in a desolate place,

    Smooth and bare, beside al-Khāl,

    Alone, though I had family and property,

    Naked, though my garment lies in the fine dust.
