For addressing dwellings, while their people
are far away from them, has always been a lovelorn man's solace.

Among the band setting out at dawn from Wajra's valley
is one slender-waisted, lovely in her smile.

When she unveils, the pearls there are strung;
and when she speaks, the pearls are unstrung.

enfolding people, unconsecrated and consecrated alike.

Fakhr al-Mulk has indeed attained, among the peaks of glory,
stations far beyond the eloquent and the inarticulate.

And he who outstrips conjecture secured them as a prize,
which, when sought, eludes whoever strives for it.

وَقَد سُئِلَ المَعروف غيرَ التكرّمِ
A youth who sought only praise and heeded,
when asked for a favor, generosity alone.

Nor, in the wake of some strange undertaking, did he spend the night
biting his fingers like one sorrowful and remorseful.

long-shafted, and the tethering-post of a well-formed steed;

with generosity such as a spring cloud would wish,
and forbearance such as Yalamlam's hills would choose.

His are secluded hours into which there has never intruded
a speck of taint, nor a brush with the forbidden.

No morning departure in them leads to a lapse,
nor any evening return among them to a sin.

His public conduct is as guarded as his private life,
and what he reveals is like what he conceals.

فَربّ عَفافٍ كانَ مثلَ التحرّمِ
Only he who abstains while able to sin is truly chaste,
for much chastity is like mere deprivation.

I complain to you of Time, except for nights
in which you rose for us, a white blaze on a black steed.

Whoever did not blame Time before you
has, after today, no reproach for those who do.

And if you visit him one day, his place of audience
is a saddled, bridled horse's back amid the swirling battle-dust.

There is no good in one who will not obey you at heart
and bear, to shield you, what you have not borne.

For most men's acts of obedience are means
to satisfy their needs and obtain some gain.

rose above my expectations and outstripped my imagining.

Joy to you at the year's turning, on the night
before which good fortune humbled seven stars.

It brought us purity from you amid mankind's murk,
and brought one peerless in glory, without a twin.
