Tell calamities: you have struck the vital spot,

and given us bitter colocynth to drink through what you have wrought.

You bereaved us of one; when we mourned that loss,

you made us forget the bereavements that came before.

So the eye's water flows, not to quench thirst,

and the heart's embers are kindled, not for warmth.

The ways of this age are to pluck from

us the finest we hope for, then the next finest.

Each day we exchange one state

for its opposite, before it can be replaced.

And man is moved away from his former states

and his age-mates, without himself moving.

We build strongholds against calamities; but should there come

the messengers of death, we have built no stronghold.

How many beauties of ours lie beneath the soil,

    cast deliberately toward decay!

Man is a deposit in the hand of Time,

to be reclaimed, and a garden to be mown.

Why weep over one who has departed, when

the gardens of Eden have been made his dwelling?

And why are we given bitter sap to drink for him, while he

is given sweet-flowing water there, as he wishes?

    حُكْمُ الصَّوابِ لمثلها أن تَقْبَلا

    King of Kings, listen to a well-wisher's words;

sound judgment requires you to accept such words.

If you have been burdened with a heavy load, you have always

been, through resolve, the ablest to shoulder a burden and bear it.

A brief life did not end until it decreed

among us that the longest survival should be yours.

O bearer of our burdens, may you be spared

weariness under a crushing matter, however intractable.

We have known Time only to relieve

distress through you, or through you resolve perplexity.

So leave lamentation, suffering, and sorrow,

and take what is noblest and fairest from the young man.

Better for us than the departed is the survivor, and better than

one whom death hurried to rest is one granted respite.

Yet if a mountain has fallen, it has left us

a successor in its place who has filled the quiver with arrowheads.

Do not wonder that he is struck, for we only

summon the mature camel to bear the pack-saddles' weight.

Storms strike none of the buildings

except one that stood taller than the rest.

So endure them; how often you have lavished on us

fortitude and endurance amid difficult trials.

And if you lose heart at the calamity, tell us

who will be our refuge when we lose heart?

So console yourself with the survivor for the one lost to death,

and with the one who stays, to whom love belongs, for the one who has gone.

He who gave has taken, and has left behind

one more faithful, better suited to survive, and fairer.

And when God pronounces His decree, face

its sudden visitations with serenity and surrender.

Do not grieve at one who always benefits you,

who grants your desire; nor accuse the most just of injustice.

    فاِقبَل من الدّهر المسيء تَنَصُّلا

    You shall see no ill in life after this;

so accept an apology from offending Time.

How often, to attain a wish, you have cleft

the army's heart and plunged into its battle dust!

And for an aim you have crossed a black, dark night,

and in pursuit you have ridden a white-blazed, white-stockinged horse.

God bless you in a tight place:

you satisfied the sword when you grew angry.

And the slender, quivering spear refuses, whenever

it pierces flanks and kidneys, to wither.

And the horses trample skulls whenever

the cowards' horses trample stony ground.

May Time never alarm us over you, nor may

any man's eye see a valley you inhabited lying deserted.

And may every wildly striding raincloud drench your dwellings,

leaving the armored warrior dust-stained and laid low.

And if Yadhbul shifts from a place

where it stood anchored, may you be spared from shifting.

And may you remain among us, commanding and ruling,

    honored among mankind and revered.

And may God water the dust of one who was, despite

all opposition, a rain-pouring cloud for us.
