O my camels, be fare for guests.

For, by generosity's measure, this is not fair:

am I to have a sandal while my neighbor is barefoot,

and be wealthy while my neighbor begs?

The reproachers reassure me that you will fear,

and spend the night as prey for wandering visitors.

Whenever a guest approaches my leather tent,

then woe to the high-humped she-camel from my swords,

on a night of pitch-black shadows,

as though it pierces the limbs

with cold; so they are by the hearthstones.

Oh, the gulf between a shortchanging miser,

    tight-fisted and narrow-cloaked,

who lets you graze at Abraq al-Azzaf,

with the strutting gait you have wished for,

in a sanctuary with impregnable borders,

hidden from reproach and from rhymes,

    beyond the reach of scouts and scent-trackers;

    and a generous, prodigal giver!

You see him, whenever he resolves to help,

never ransoming the fat camels with the lean.

O my companion—you are not faithful to me,

nor is there among you any healer for my ailment.

You drew back from me on the night of galloping,

and took fright, terrified, with nothing to fear,

and flew like a tuft of down on dust-blowing winds.

What harm is it to you, Abu al-Hajjaf,

from one who sinks in you and at times floats?

You are neither my unfailing spring nor my scant drops,

nor for my frugality, nor for my extravagance.

Do not fault my shunning you or my turning away,

while you forever seek to oppose me,

and are turbid for me, yet clear for others,

and keep ties with everyone who shuns me.

My probing you and seeing through you yielded nothing,

nor my setting you straight or my straightening tool,

nor my night-travel toward you and my pathless wandering,

but an inadequate friend in you,

full of delay and broken promises.

Onward, men of noble lineage and proud noses,

away from the worn and effaced abode of baseness.

It is no winter abode—no, nor a summer retreat,

nor is there any ash there at the hearthstones,

where the pride of nobles is humiliated,

and camels' padded feet are equal to cloven hooves,

among those who came of base stock.

From them comes no reproach for one who turns away,

nor, among them, a 'May you recover!' for one who stumbles.

For homes are homes only through close companions.
