I care not, seeing with my own eyes
قَدindeed بَلغتُI attained الّذيwhat أردتُI wanted وَجاوَزand surpassed (stem)
تُI (verb ending) طَويلاًby far تَمَنِّيَthe aspirations الأقوامِof peoples
I have attained what I wanted, and surpassed
What noble circles hoped of me
by far the aspirations of peoples.
And if I were in a high place of glory
ماnot أُباليI care وقدand indeed رأيتُI have seen بنفسيin myself
ماwhat ترجّتْit hoped منّيfrom me بُدورَthe coming حِمامِيof my death
I care not—having seen in myself
Above the dust of dreams
what my soul hoped of me—for the coming of my death.
And if my skirt and train were exposed
وإذاand if كنتُI am فيon يَفاعٍa height منof العِزglo-
زِ-ry منيفٍtowering علىabove ذُراthe summits الأحلامِof dreams
And if I stand on a height of glory
For censured faults and sins
towering above the summits of dreams,
Then an inert life and a departure
وتعرَّتْand were stripped bare مآزريmy waistcloths وذُيوليand my hems
منof عيوبٍfaults مذمومةٍblameworthy وأثامِand sins
and my waistcloths and hems are stripped bare
Are impending, soon to come
of blameworthy faults and sins,
فحياةٌthen life كميتةٍlike a death ورحيلٌand departure
إنْif تدانىdraws near وشيكُهُits swift coming كمُقامِlike remaining
then life is like death, and departure,
if its swift coming draws near, is like remaining.
