ونحن جميعاً هاجعون على الغَمْرِ
Was it from you that a phantom came by night, though it used not to roam,
while we all lay asleep at al-Ghamr?

I marveled at how it made for our riding-camels
and our saddles among the saddles, though it knew nothing.

How did it find its way, with the plain between me and it,
and a glittering waste, bright at both edges and withholding rain?

It reached men with disheveled saddlebags, who had halted for the night
at a rugged stopping-place and a desolate wilderness,

with heads that drowsiness had filled with drunken stupor.

They traveled by night with Simāk al-Rumḥ above their heads,
and did not doze until the Eagle-star had set.

It lay beside me through the night, and in our slumber we were
as though vintage wine were sating us.

I clasp my forearms around it, against my breast,
and bed it in the space from my chest to my throat.

I longed for it while night bore its form
to my bed, until we met by fate.

They charged me with the sin of gray hair, as though
my hands had willfully wrought it, not the hand of Time.

that you thought me weak, or despaired of my life?

for the prime of youth that has passed from my life.

Nights when my desire never went beyond my beauty,
and no fair woman rejected my prohibition or command.

The night of my youth was coal-black, its star gone down;
you would see the eye journey through it an age without dawn.

with rage, his breast brimming with unavenged wrongs.

You make him drink every day and night,
though he is not thirsty, the cup of enmity and treachery.

You were angered by what God enlarged within my grasp,
by the glory He exalted and the pride He made resplendent.

I am one whose riding-camels are never made to kneel
on inhospitable land, stripped starkly bare.

You know well that my tongue keeps far away
from being loosed on shameful words and obscene speech.

It deceived you that I covered over your disloyalty
and hid it from people's eyes with kindness.

as a shivering man wraps his flanks in the cold.

were I not broad-hearted, my breast would be too narrow to contain it.

A vile utterance came from your fool's tongue;
I deliberately played deaf to it, though I had no deafness.

a Yemeni's folding his cloak better preserves its fragrance.

when misfortune bit me, lay my weight or my load.
