ضَمِنَتْguaranteed مجدَكyour glory العُلاeminence والمساعيand noble endeavors
ضَمِنَتْ مجدَك العُلا والمساعي
وضمانand the guarantee of العَلاءeminence حربُan enemy of الضّياعِloss
وضمان العَلاء حربُ الضّياعِ
Eminence and noble endeavors have guaranteed your glory,
and eminence's guarantee is the enemy of loss.
آنَthe time has come أنْthat تُقْتضىbe exacted حقوقٌrights تراختْwere delayed
آنَ أنْ تُقْتضى حقوقٌ تراختْ
آذنَتْgave notice بعدafter فُرقةٍseparation باِجتماعِof reunion
آذنَتْ بعد فُرقةٍ باِجتماعِ
It is time for long-delayed rights to be exacted;
they have heralded reunion after separation.
زاوَلوهاthey pursued them وأنتَwhile you ترغبturn away عنهاfrom them
زاوَلوها وأنتَ ترغب عنها
والأحاظيand good fortunes نتائجُfruits الإِمتناعِabstention
والأحاظي نتائجُ الإِمتناعِ
They pursued them while you turned away from them,
and good fortunes are the fruits of abstention.
ظَعَنتْdeparted لمdid not تُراعهاwatch them باِشتِياقٍwith longing
ظَعَنتْ لم تُراعها باِشتِياقٍ
وأنابتْand returned لمdid not تدعُهاcall them بزَماعِwith resolve
وأنابتْ لم تدعُها بزَماعِ
They departed; you did not watch them with longing,
and returned, though you had not called them with resolve.
رَبَعَتْsettled مُذْsince نفضتَyou shook كفَّكَyour hand منهاfrom them
رَبَعَتْ مُذْ نفضتَ كفَّكَ منها
بينbetween حقٍّa right ثاوٍabiding وحقٍّand a right مضاعِsquandered
بين حقٍّ ثاوٍ وحقٍّ مضاعِ
They settled once you shook your hand free of them,
between an abiding right and a squandered right.
كيفَhow لاnot تَجْتَوِيloathe مَحلَّthe abode of الدّناياbaseness
كيفَ لا تَجْتَوِي مَحلَّ الدّنايا
وهيand they قدalready فارقتْleft عزيزَcherished البِقاعِplaces
وهي قد فارقتْ عزيزَ البِقاعِ
How could they not loathe the abode of baseness,
when they have left a cherished place?
وعلاand overtook الذّمُّblame مَنwhoever أَلَظَّclung persistently بغَوْرِto the lowlands of الthe
وعلا الذّمُّ مَن أَلَظَّ بغَوْرِ ال
أرضearth منfrom بعدafter نَجدهاits uplands واليَفاعِand the heights
أرض من بعد نَجدها واليَفاعِ
And blame overtakes whoever clings to the lowlands of the
earth after its uplands and heights.
قَصُرتْfell short دونهاof reaching them الأكفُّhands فألقتْso they laid down
قَصُرتْ دونها الأكفُّ فألقتْ
أوْقَهاtheir burden عندwith مستطيلlong-reaching الذّراعِthe arm
أوْقَها عند مستطيل الذّراعِ
Hands fell short of reaching them, so they laid down
their burden with one long of arm:
مُضربٍturning away عنfrom تصفّحِscrutinizing الذّنبِfault لاهٍunheeding
مُضربٍ عن تصفّحِ الذّنبِ لاهٍ
عنof حسودٍan envier لماto what عناهconcerns him مراعِattentive
عن حسودٍ لما عناه مراعِ
one who shuns the scrutiny of faults, unheeding
of an envier, mindful of what concerns him;
كَلِفِenamored الرّأيthought فيin المحامدِpraiseworthy deeds سارٍjourneying
كَلِفِ الرّأي في المحامدِ سارٍ
فيinto أقاصيthe farthest reaches of الآمالِhopes والأطماعِand aspirations
في أقاصي الآمالِ والأطماعِ
his thought enamored of noble deeds, journeying
to the farthest reaches of hopes and aspirations.
وَإذاand when نكّبتturned aside وجوهُthe faces of أُناسٍsome people
وَإذا نكّبت وجوهُ أُناسٍ
عنfrom سبيلَيْthe two paths of رعايةٍcare ودفاعِand defense
عن سبيلَيْ رعايةٍ ودفاعِ
And when the faces of some people turn aside
from the two paths of care and defense,
جاشsurged واديthe valley of حِفاظِهِhis zeal for honor فتعدّتْso surpassed
جاش وادي حِفاظِهِ فتعدّتْ
زَخْرَةُthe swelling of المَدِّthe flood مُشرفاتِthe crests of التِّلاعِthe ravines
زَخْرَةُ المَدِّ مُشرفاتِ التِّلاعِ
the valley of his zeal for honor surges, and
the swelling flood overtops the ravines' crests.
مُرهَقٍhard-pressed فائتِoutstripping الأمورِaffairs بجِدٍّthrough diligence
مُرهَقٍ فائتِ الأمورِ بجِدٍّ
فيamid أبِيِّunyielding الخُطوبِcalamities جِدّtruly مُطاعِobeyed
في أبِيِّ الخُطوبِ جِدّ مُطاعِ
Hard-pressed, yet outstripping events through diligence,
truly obeyed amid unyielding calamities;
ثاقبِsparking brightly الزّندِthe fire-stick مُنْجحِfulfilling الوعدِthe promise صافيpure الرthe (start of 'bounty')
ثاقبِ الزّندِ مُنْجحِ الوعدِ صافي الر
رِفْدِbounty ماضيkeen الشَّباthe edges فسيحspacious الرِّباعِhomesteads
رِفْدِ ماضي الشَّبا فسيح الرِّباعِ
his fire-stick sparks brightly; he keeps his promise, and pure is his
bounty; keen is his edge, spacious are his homesteads.
لاnot تراهyou see him علىdespite منازعةِcontending with الأيthe days (beginning)
لا تراه على منازعةِ الأي
يامِdays (continuation) يسخوgives generously لمُفْرِحٍto one burdened by need بنزاعِwith contention
يامِ يسخو لمُفْرِحٍ بنزاعِ
You never see him, despite his struggle with the
days, give grudgingly to one weighed down by need.
وَإذاand when سَربلَclothed الخداعُdeceit نفوساًsouls
وَإذا سَربلَ الخداعُ نفوساً
حسَرَتْcast off نفسُهhis soul قِناعَthe veil of الخداعِdeceit
حسَرَتْ نفسُه قِناعَ الخداعِ
And when deceit cloaks souls,
his soul strips off the veil of deceit.
مأثُراتٌglorious deeds شَقَقَنْwere arduous حتّىso that لقدindeed قمundertook (word begins)
مأثُراتٌ شَقَقَنْ حتّى لقد قم
نَthey (feminine plural ending) بعذرِan excuse for المقصّرِthe one falling short المُرتاعِthe frightened
نَ بعذرِ المقصّرِ المُرتاعِ
Deeds so arduous that they have indeed
provided an excuse for the frightened man who falls short.
قَدindeed تَعاطوْاthey tried to attain مداهhis reach فاِنصرفَso turned away الفَوْthe surpassing (word begins)
قَد تَعاطوْا مداه فاِنصرفَ الفَوْ
تُcompletion of 'surpassing' بهwith him عنfrom معاشرٍcompanies طُلّاعِaspiring
تُ به عن معاشرٍ طُلّاعِ
They strove to match his reach, but his lead
carried him beyond those aspiring companies.
كلُّevery غلٍّrancor لمdid not يَشفِهِheal it يومُa day of حِلْمٍforbearance
كلُّ غلٍّ لم يَشفِهِ يومُ حِلْمٍ
برؤُهits cure فيin دواءِthe remedy of يومِa day of المِصاعِcombat
برؤُه في دواءِ يومِ المِصاعِ
Every rancor that a day of forbearance fails to heal
finds its cure in the remedy of a day of combat.
ماwhat اِصطفاهsingled it out فيكin you الخليفةُthe caliph جلَّىbrought clarity
ما اِصطفاه فيك الخليفةُ جلَّى
عنfrom نفوسٍsouls بينamong الشّكوكِdoubts رِتاعِgrazing
عن نفوسٍ بين الشّكوكِ رِتاعِ
What the caliph singled out in you brought clarity
to souls grazing amid doubts.
قدindeed رأَوْهthey saw him مُستدنياًbringing close لكyou (as object) حتَّىuntil
قد رأَوْه مُستدنياً لك حتَّى
أعْوَزَتْهُfailed him مواطنُstations of الإِرتفاعِelevation
أعْوَزَتْهُ مواطنُ الإِرتفاعِ
They have seen him drawing you near, until
he had no higher stations left.
وبأَسماعهمْand through their ears جرىflowed فَرْطُan abundance of تقريpraise (word begins)
وبأَسماعهمْ جرى فَرْطُ تقري
ظكof you (word ending) والفَهمُand understanding شافعٌan advocate للسَّماعِfor hearing
ظك والفَهمُ شافعٌ للسَّماعِ
And through their ears flowed an abundance of
praise of you, while understanding lends hearing its support.
حيثwhere تسترجفtremble القلوبُhearts وتعنوand submit
حيث تسترجف القلوبُ وتعنو
لجلالِto the majesty of المقامِthe station نفسُthe soul of الشّجاعِthe brave man
لجلالِ المقامِ نفسُ الشّجاعِ
Where hearts tremble, and in submission bows
before the station's majesty the brave man's soul.
قرّبتْكَbrought you close الحقوقُrightful claims منهto him وأدّاand led
قرّبتْكَ الحقوقُ منه وأدّا
كyou إلىto حمدهhis praise كريمُnoble الطّباعِnature
ك إلى حمده كريمُ الطّباعِ
Your rightful claims brought you close to him, and
your noble nature led you to his praise.
غَمَرَengulfed النُّجْحُsuccess غَمْرَthe flood of آمالناour hopes فيكin you
غَمَرَ النُّجْحُ غَمْرَ آمالنا فيك
فلمso did not تَبقَremain حجّةٌan excuse فيregarding اِصطناعِpatronage
فلم تَبقَ حجّةٌ في اِصطناعِ
Success has engulfed the flood of our hopes in you,
so no excuse remains in the matter of patronage.
ولِّهاturn it toward وجهَناour way الغداةَthis morning وخذْand take ماwhatever
ولِّها وجهَنا الغداةَ وخذْ ما
شئتَyou wish منof نهضةٍvigorous effort وفضلِand excellence of اِضطلاعِcapability
شئتَ من نهضةٍ وفضلِ اِضطلاعِ
Turn it toward us this morning, and take whatever
you wish of vigorous effort and outstanding capability.
