أَمّاas for الحبيبُthe beloved فَقدso indeed فُزناwe won بزَورَتِهِhis visit
فيin ليلةٍa night لاno قَذَىvexing mote فيهاin it سوىexcept القِصَرِbrevity
As for the beloved, we have indeed won his visit,
On a night whose only vexing mote was its brevity.
فبتُّso I spent the night أُدنِيbringing close إلىto قلبيmy heart ومنand close to بصريmy sight
مَنthe one who حلّoccupied عنديfor me محلَّthe place of القلبthe heart والبصرِand sight
So I spent the night bringing close to my heart and sight
Him who, for me, held the place of heart and sight.
لمdid not يطعَمِtaste الغُمْضَsleep قلبٌa heart فيهconcerning him مُقْتَسَمٌdivided
وإِنّهyet indeed it لقريرٌis surely content العينof eye بالسَّهَرِwith wakefulness
A heart divided over him tasted no sleep,
Yet its eye was gladdened by wakefulness.
كمhow great بينthe difference between إذْwhen أناI فيin تعذيبِهِhis tormenting سهريmy sleeplessness
وَبينand between إِذْwhen أَناI فيin تَقبيلهkissing him سمريmy nighttime converse
How different when I lay awake, tormented by him,
From when my nightly converse was in kissing him!
لاnot أَشكُرI thank الدّهرTime أولىbestowed فيin الزّمانtime يداًa favor
ثمّthen اِستَردّtook back الّذيwhat أولاهhad bestowed it فيat السَّحَرِdaybreak
I give no thanks to Time, which once bestowed a favor,
Then took back at dawn what it had bestowed.
