وقالوا نراها خُطّةً مُدْلَهِمّةً

وقالوا نراها خُطّةً مُدْلَهِمّةً

فَفُتْها وإلّا أنتَ رهنُ حبالها

فَفُتْها وإلّا أنتَ رهنُ حبالها

And they said, “We see it as a dark predicament;

They said, "We see it as a devious, scheming plan,

so escape it, or you will be captive to its ropes.”

So undo it, else you'll be hostage to its ropes."

فقلتُ وهل أخشى ودرعي كفايةٌ

فقلتُ وهل أخشى ودرعي كفايةٌ

من اللَّه ما ترمي العِدا من نبالها

من اللَّه ما ترمي العِدا من نبالها

Then I said, “Should I fear—when my armor is protection

I said, "Why would I fear when my armor suffices,

from God—the arrows the foes shoot?

From God, whatever the foe throws with its arrows?"

فكم وَرْطَةٍ ضاقتْ عليّ فلم يزلْ

فكم وَرْطَةٍ ضاقتْ عليّ فلم يزلْ

بِيَ اللَّه حتّى اِنتاشني من خلالها

بِيَ اللَّه حتّى اِنتاشني من خلالها

For many a plight hemmed me in, yet still

So how often has a tight spot constricted me,

God stood by me until He plucked me from its midst.

Yet God stayed by me until I slipped through it.

وكم نكبةٍ طالتْ يداً لتنالني

وكم نكبةٍ طالتْ يداً لتنالني

فباعد ما بيني وبين مَنالها

فباعد ما بيني وبين مَنالها

And many a calamity stretched out a hand to reach me,

And how often has an ordeal reached out to get me,

yet He widened the distance between me and its reach.”

Yet He distanced what was between me and its reaching.
