وماand what جرّتْbrought إليَّupon me يَداthe two hands of زمانيmy time
And a woman asked to learn what had befallen me
A way for you to know what pained me
and what the hands of my time had brought upon me.
And what fate brought my way
فَقلتُso I said لَهاto her لوif اِستمليتِyou sought dictation ماwhat بيis in me
لأَملتهُwould dictate it عليكِto you غُروبُsharp barbs of شانيmy foe
So I said to her: If you sought a dictation of what ails me,
So I said, if you gathered what was in me
my foe’s sharp barbs would dictate it to you.
Sunset on my condition would fill you
تعمّدنيtargeted me زماناًfor a time ريبُthe adversity of دهريmy fate
فلمّاthen when أنْthat تعمّدنيit targeted me رمانيit shot me
For a time, my fate’s adversity took aim at me;
Time intentionally tempted me
then, having singled me out, it shot me.
So when it tempted me, it threw me away
ولِيand I have مُتَزَحْزَحٌa place of escape عنهfrom it لوif اِنّيthat I

I would have somewhere to escape it, if only I
And I have turned away from it, if only I
could see it with my two eyes as it sees me.
Could see it with my eyes as it sees me
أقودI lead إلىto المقابرِthe graves كلَّevery يومٍday
علىagainst رغميmy will خبيئاًone secretly cherished فيin جَنانيmy heart
Every day I lead to the graves,
I lead to the graves each day
against my will, one treasured in my heart,
Against my will, hidden in my shields
وأُودِعُهُand I consign him علىdespite أنّيthat I am شفيقٌtenderly concerned

and consign him, though I care tenderly
And I bid it farewell, as if I am kind
for him, to each dust-gray, winding hollow—
To it, to all the worn out resting places
مُطَمِّسَةٍeffacing all traces يضلّis lost المرءُa person فيهاin it
ضَلالَthe loss of العَصْفِdry leaves خرّfallen منfrom الفِنانِthe boughs
a place that effaces all trace, where a man is lost
Covered, where people lose their way
like a dry leaf fallen from the boughs:
Like stray cattle in the wilderness
مُعَرَّسُthe resting place of كلِّevery مملوكٍslave ومَلْكٍand king
ومُضطَجَعُand the bed of المكرَّمِthe honored والمُهانِand the humiliated
the resting place of every slave and king,
The bed of every slave and king
and the bed of the honored and the humiliated.
And the resting place of the honored and disgraced
وفارقنيand parted from me بداهيةِthrough a calamity of اللّياليthe nights
حبيبٌa beloved ماnot سلَوْتُI forgot ولاnor سَلانيhe forgot me
And through a calamity of the nights I lost
And a beloved left me with the nights' inevitability
a beloved whom I never forgot, nor did he forget me.
In whom my wishes gathered
فأُصبحso I enter the morning فيهin him مجتمعgathered together الأمانيthe hopes
وأُمسيand I enter the evening حَيثwhere لاnot تأتيcome الأمانيthe hopes
I rise with all my hopes gathered in him,
And I become where wishes do not come
and by evening I am where hopes cannot come.
And they said you have become patient with calamities
وقالواand they said قدalready مَرَنْتَyou have grown accustomed علىto الرّزاياthe calamities
فقلتُso I said لهمْto them وماand what يُغنِيavails مِرانيmy habituation
They said: You have grown accustomed to calamities.
So I said to them, what good is my patience?
I replied: What good is my habituation?
And in the days there is a silent hammer
وفيand among الأيّامِthe days مُطْرِقةٌone with bowed head صَموتٌsilent
تَقمّصُbucks بالشّجاعِbeneath the brave man وبالجبانِand beneath the coward
And among the days is a silent one with bowed head,
That takes the form of brave and coward
that bucks beneath the brave man and the coward.
If it was not the one that weakened my right hand

ألَيِستْis it not بالّتيthe one that أوْهَتْweakened بَنانيmy fingers
So suppose it had not cut off my right hand—
Is it not the one that cracked my molars?
is it not the one that weakened my fingers?
If it was not the one that split my cheek
وهَبْهاand suppose it لمnot تكنhad been صدعتْsplit قَناتيmy spear-shaft
أَليستis it not بالّتيthe one that ثملتْblunted سِنانيmy spearhead
And suppose it had not split my spear-shaft—
Is it not the one that loosened my teeth?
is it not the one that blunted my spearhead?
Oh who excuses me from an evil neighbor
أَلاah مَنwho عاذرِيwill excuse me منconcerning جارa neighbor of سوءٍevil
إذاif لمnot آتِهِI go to him هَرَباًin flight أَتانيhe comes to me
Ah, who will excuse me concerning an evil neighbor
If I do not flee him, he comes to me
who comes to me when, fleeing, I stay away?
Insistent in what he wants from me
مُعانٍaided فيin الّذيwhat يَبغيهِhe seeks it منّيfrom me
وإنْeven if أَرْبىhe exceeds bounds ومدلولٍand guided to مكانيmy whereabouts
He is aided in whatever he seeks from me,
Even if I refrain, his place known to me
even if he overreaches, and guided to my whereabouts.
He has hands for what I earn

وماand not ليI have بِالّذيagainst what يجنيhe inflicts يدانِtwo hands; strength
He has strength against whatever I inflict on him,
While I have nothing that I earn
yet I have no hands to resist what he inflicts.
I see him as peaceful yet he wages war
أقدّرُهI deem him المُسالِمَpeaceable وهوwhile he is حَرْبٌan enemy
وأحسبُهُand I think him بعيداًfar away وهوwhile he is دانِnear
I deem him peaceable, though he is an enemy,
And count him far though he is near
and think him distant, though he is near.
His wrongs pass me for others
وتعدونيand pass me by صوائبُهُhis well-aimed shots لغيريfor someone other than me
وماyet not أعدىspared حميميmy dear friend ماwhat عدانيpassed me by
His well-aimed shots pass me by for others,
While my intimate does not wrong me
but what spared me did not spare my dear friend.
If only the one I avoided and shunned
فياso, O ليتَwould that الّذيthat which أقلاهُI hate it منهin him
وأجفوهand I shun it قلانيhated me أوْor جَفانيshunned me
If only that which I hate in him
Had shunned or abandoned me
and shun would hate or shun me!
You, more knowing today than me

أَصَرْفٌis it unmixed wine ماwhat سقانيgave me to drink السّاقيانِthe two cupbearers
Consider: today you know better than I—
See, the two cups did not quench my thirst
was what the two cupbearers gave me unmixed wine?
Did those two delight me
وهلْand did غنّىsing لِيَto me العَصْرانِnight and day فيمنْof those whom

And did night and day sing to me of those
In whom I fell for what I heard from them?
I loved, with what I heard, to delight me?
And did you feel, leader of the camels
وهلْand did أحسستَyou sense ياO حادِيdriver of المطاياthe mounts
عشيّةَon the evening فارقونيthey left me باِفتِتانيof my anguish
And did you sense, O driver of the mounts,
The eve they left me, tempting me?
my anguish on the evening they left me,
The eve the beloved lessened herself from me
عشيّةَon the evening قلّصwithdrew المحبوبُthe beloved عنّيfrom me
وقامand rose بماwith what كرهتُI dreaded النّاعيانِthe two death-announcers
the evening my beloved withdrew from me,
And did what I hated, the two lamenters
and the two heralds of death brought what I dreaded?
And I was careful in my words to you, hearing
وقدand already أرعيتُI entrusted نطقيmy speech منكfrom you سمعاًan ear
فهلso have أنكرتَyou disputed شيئاًanything منin بيانيmy account
I have entrusted my speech to an ear of yours;
Did you find any flaw in my explanation?
have you found anything to dispute in my account?
For I am one who disdains to utter
فإنّيfor I am مَنone whom ينالassails الخطبُcalamity منهfrom him
فيأنفyet disdains أنْto يفوهspeak بهof it لسانيmy tongue
For I am one whom calamity assails,
What news reaches him
yet my tongue disdains to speak of it.
Another, after five, empowered

It is not the camel-herd granted, after five days,
To hold the camel's reins, rattling the bags
water in plenty that is scared by rattling worn-out waterskins.
And patience for what I cannot avoid

بضَرْبيby my blows فيin الكريهةِbattle أوْor طِعانيmy spear-thrusts
And patience with what I cannot ward off
By striking the hated or stabbing
by my blows in battle or my spear-thrusts.
And from greed I fool myself against certainty
ومنand out of طَمَعٍhope أُخادعI deceive مِنْsome of يقينِيmy certainty
علىwith عَمْدٍdeliberate intent وأُكذِبُand I deny منsome of عِيانيwhat my own eyes see
And out of hope I delude myself about some of what I know,
Intentionally, and lie against evidence
deliberately, and deny some of what my own eyes see.
And I remain sacrificing in the mortal world
وأُضحِيand I pass the day فيamong بنيthe children of الدّنياthe world مقيماًdwelling
وفيwhile in أيديthe hands of نوائبهاits calamities عنانيmy reins
And I pass the day dwelling among the world’s children,
With its misfortunes holding my reins
while my reins are in the hands of its calamities.
Every day events toy with me

وتُقْرِئنِيand make me read أساطيرَthe tales of الزّمانِtime
Events toy with me every day,
And tell me the myths of time
and make me read the tales of time.
With falsehoods it built

And in al-Zawra stand new structures, raised
On glorification and honor clearly
in reverence and honor by a builder.
They rose as virtues on platforms of grace

They rise in piety above the heights of Radwa,
And reached high on the mountain peaks
and tower in eminence over Aban’s two hills.
They leaned on Iraq for those who see it

To those who see them, they stand above Iraq,
And its yards are shelters for them
and God’s courtyards are their abodes.
So many causes for them lead to generosity
فكمhow many سَبَبٍa means لهنّfor them إلىto العطاياgifts

How many paths they have to gifts,
And many doors for them to gardens
and how many gates to the gardens of Paradise!
And for the people is circumambulation around them

And peoples circle around them
Their circumambulation around the Yemeni corner
as they circle around the Yemeni Corner:

ذوي السُّوراتِ تُتْلى والمَثاني
tombs of the falcons of Quraysh,
Those of nobility, the verses recited for them
possessors of the recited surahs and oft-repeated verses,
Of the eminent group who gathered ascensions

And won the lofty staffs of the wager
and won the victor’s reed in the race for eminence.
People who do not care for death

ونارُwhile the fire of الحربِwar ساطعةُrising high الدُّخانِthe smoke
Men who pay no heed to death,
With the fires of war blazing smoke
while war’s fire sends its smoke aloft.
Faced with war or drought they meet it
وتلقاهمْand you meet them بحربٍin war أَوْor بجَدْبٍin drought
مطاعيناًprodigious spear-thrusters مطاعيمَgenerous feeders الجِفانِthe great bowls
You meet them in war or drought
Obeying, seasoning the dry years
as mighty spear-thrusters, generous feeders from great bowls.
So make my companions halt with them

So, my two companions, set down my baggage among them
Before an awaited order comes
just before the event you both await descends.

Let me dwell in their shade as long as I live,
And let my time reach me in their shelter
and let my appointed hour overtake me in their precincts.
Perhaps I will neighbor them dead

Perhaps I may lie dead beside them
And take from their intercession my wishes
and gain my safety through their intercession.

For I have spent my life in lapses
And taken from sins enough for me
and acquired my fill of sins.
