ونَجْلاءَand a gaping wound لاnot تَرْقاceases لهاof it الدّهرَever دمعةٌa tear
لهاit has بينbetween أطباقِlayers of الضّلوعِthe ribs نشيجُsobbing
And a gaping wound whose tears never cease,
Tears do not flow for her through time,
it sobs between the layers of the ribs.
Within her ribs she only has a sigh.
تُضيِّقُmakes difficult رَتْقاًmending ماwhat بهاis in it منof تفتّقٍrupture
وتُفرِجُand opens gaps فيماin what ليسis not فيهِin it فُروجُopenings
It makes the rents within it hard to mend,
She tightens what is already constricted in her,
and opens gaps where none exist.
And finds relief where there is none.
فَلاso not دارُهاits dwelling فيat ساعةِthe hour of النأْيseparation تَنْتَئيgrows distant
وَلاnor بُرؤُهاits healing فيماamong what يَعوجstops by يعوجُstops by
So its dwelling does not grow distant at the hour of separation,
She has no shelter in separation's hour,
nor does its healing stop by among all that stop by.
Nor straightness in crookedness.
تصَمُّturns deaf عَنِto الرّاقينthe charm-healers منهاagainst it كأنّهاas though it were
مُصِرٌّone who persists علىdespite عَذْلِthe blame of اللُّحاةِthe reproachers لَجوجُobstinate
It turns deaf to those chanting charms against it, as though it were
She is deaf to those who call her, as if
an obstinate man persisting despite the reproachers’ blame.
She persists in spurning eloquent men.
تُفادىis ransomed وتُحْشىand is packed بالسِّبارِwith the wound-probe فَسَبْرُهاso probing it
دَخولٌentry إلىinto أعماقهاits depths وخَروجُand exit
It is ransomed and packed with probes; probing it
She avoids and fears the spy, so spying on her
means going into its depths and coming out.
Is to enter and exit her depths.
لهاit has فغرَةٌa gaping mouth إنْif شاءَhe wishes يوماًone day وُلوجَهاto enter it
خَروقٌa piercer لهاof it بالرّمحِwith the spear فهوthen he وَلوجُcan enter
It has a gaping mouth: should he one day wish to enter it—
On a day she desires, her surrender
a man who pierces it with a spear—then he can enter.
Is a breach for the spear - that is her surrender.
