Ah, my people, alas for the allotted fate,

and for the days that turn away from my wounds,

and for the world that puts off its calamities,

as mangy camels put off afflicting healthy camels.

It makes peace with me, yet something lies hidden for me within it,

over which I choke even on sweet, pure water.

And oh, for a calamity that tore away my right hand

and stripped the flight feathers from my wing.

You were captivated by it, though its appearance was ugly,

as the love-stricken man was captivated by beauties.

Listen: tell the finest of Quraysh,

and the dwellers of the outlying districts and broad valleys:

The mountain of lofty virtues has fallen from among you,

and the pinnacle of noble deeds and generosity.

God has cut off your withers; so be

like a limping she-camel veering away from the fold.

Her weary driver keeps pushing her on,

though weariness is far from departing.

Turn your eyes away from yearning toward him,

for this evening no soaring aspiration is yours.

He was wrested from us, as a son of night is robbed,

weary of sleeplessness, of the morning.

So tell the clans who feared my spear-points

and what my spears or blades would reap:

Come to drink at my brimming pools from wherever you wish,

for today I lie exposed to enemies.

Seek me out, and do not fear my blows,

for I have become stripped of weapons.

Lead me; in your hands I am no longer

as headstrong as you once knew me.

    Expect no gladness from me,

for Ibn Musa has taken my gladness away.

I cling to the cause that grieves me,

and cast aside the cause that consoles me.

What turned me aside has turned me from my purpose,

and time has barred the farthest reach of my wishes.

There is no desert where my mounts may trot,

nor open sky where my winds may blow.

Who, then, will lead the horses, hastening onward,

as they strain against the reins like arrow-shafts?

And who will make the white swords lap dark blood

from enemies on the day of close combat?

And who will kindle within war's blaze,

when it rages, the shafts of spears?

And who will help a captive clad in leather bonds,

in dread, held back from release?

And who, in giving wealth, will defy

the fables of reproaching and scolding women?

And who will help one stalled with promises, kept waiting,

and one cast aside, shut out from bounty?

Such is the world: it mutters, then brings

the plain truth of a grievous affair.

It grants one gift and takes another back,

and folds earnestness into the very heart of jest.

Who, then, will grant redress against the mother of calamities

when she comes bearing grievous wounds?

May God's peace, carried by the nights

and gifted by morning to evening,

rest upon a grave that has clasped, from Lu'ayy's line,

the wellspring of worship and righteousness:

a youth who drank his fill only of the lawful,

and whose sustenance was nothing but the permitted.

His waistcloths were never stained by shame,

nor did his palm ever touch wine.

His back was light, unburdened by sins,

    and his record bare of wrongdoing;

guided in all matters toward their right course,

    and shown the door to success;

one of those people whose hearts

are filled in every corner with remembrance of God,

with bodies that piety makes seem sickly

to their beholder, but with faith that is sound.

Sons of the forefathers, rise and mourn him

with tongues eloquent in the praises they utter.

And if you wish a slaughter in his honor, drive

the souls of milch-camel owners away from their camels.

May every pouring, rain-heavy cloud reach you,

and the bearer of every laden, swollen cloud.

And may the dark clouds water you, moving by night

slow of step, like worn-out camels.

Earth whose dweller was pure, so all night

the winds' breaths wafted fragrance within it.

It needs no lavender to grow beside it,

nor lamps of daisies to be kindled around it.
