بربِّكby your Lord أيّهاO البرقُthe lightning اليمانيYemeni
تكشّفunveil لِيfor me بلمعكwith your flash عنfrom over أبانِAban
By your Lord, O Yemeni lightning,
By your Lord, O Yemeni lightning
reveal Aban to me with your flash.
Reveal to me with your glimmer the wells
فَقِدماًfor long ago ماindeed (emphatic) جَلَوْتَyou revealed عليّto me وَهْناًlate at night
شَماماًShamam فيin صبيغةِa hue of أُرْجُوانِcrimson
For long ago, late at night, you revealed to me
For long have you visited me, weakened,
Shamam in a crimson hue.
A whiff in the dye of purple
وكدْتَand you nearly وماthough not شعرتَyou knew بذاكof that منِّيabout me
تَدُلُّyou guide الطّالبينthose searching علىto مكانيmy whereabouts
And you nearly, though unaware of this about me,
You almost expired without feeling me
showed those searching for me where I was.
Guiding seekers to my whereabouts
أرِقتُI lay sleepless لضوءِbecause of the light of نارٍa fire منكfrom you تبدوappearing
وتخبوand fades فيin السّماءِthe sky بلاwithout دُخانِsmoke
I lay sleepless at the light of a fire appearing from you,
I was sleepless because of your glowing light
and fading in the sky without smoke.
Which appears and hides in the sky without smoke
كماas لَوَّحْتَyou flashed فيin ظلماءِthe darkness of ليلٍa night
إلىto الأبطالthe warriors فيin العَضْبِthe keen sword اليمانِيYemeni
As you flashed in the darkness of night,
As if you waved in the darkness of night
in the keen Yemeni blade before the warriors.
To the heroes in the sandy Yemeni land
أراكI see you إذاwhen لمعتَyou flash وعنand after قليلٍa little while
تغيبyou vanish فلاso not أراكI see you ولاnor ترانيyou see me
I see you when you flash, and before long
I see you when you shine and after a short while
you vanish: I do not see you, nor do you see me.
You disappear so I see you not nor do you see me
وأرقُبُand I watch منكfrom you خدّاعاًa deceiver لِحسّيof my senses
مَروقاًdarting away بالتّقلُّبِthrough shifting عنbeyond عِيانيmy sight
And I watch you, a deceiver of my senses,
And I await from you a deceiver of my senses
slipping beyond my sight through your shifting.
Disappearing with fickleness from my eyes
كأنّكas though you لاnot تقرّstay steady علىon طريقٍa course
أخَذْتَyou took سَناكyour radiance منfrom عهدthe pledge of الغوانيlovely women
As though, never keeping to one course,
As if you do not settle on a path
you took your radiance from the promises of lovely women.
You took your year from the era of love
وتخفقand you quiver فيin نواحيthe reaches of الأُفْقِthe horizon حتّىso that
كأنّكas though you were فيin الوغىbattle قلبُthe heart of الجبانِthe coward
And you quiver along the horizon's reaches, so that
And you flutter in the horizons until
you seem a coward's heart in battle.
You seem amidst the tumult the coward's heart
تَخبُّyou trot إليَّtoward me مِنfrom بَلَدٍa land بعيدٍdistant
مَنيعٍunassailable لاnot تَعَلَّقُهreach it الأمانيhopes
You trot toward me from a far-off land,
You hide to me from a distant,
unassailable, beyond the reach of hopes.
Impregnable land, no hopes attached to it
وتُذْكِرنيand you remind me وبالكُand your concern غيرُunlike باليmy concern
ضلالاًin vain ماwhat تقدّمhas passed منof زمانيmy lifetime
And you remind me—though your cares are not mine—
And remind me while your mind is not my mind
in vain, of the bygone days of my life,
Straying from what of my life has passed
وعيشاًand a life كنتُI used to أجرِيrace فيهin it دهراًfor a long time
إلىtoward اللّذّاتِpleasures مُستَلَبَrobbed of العِنانِthe reins
and of a life in which, for ages, I raced
And a life in which I spent an epoch
toward pleasures, robbed of my reins.
Indulged without restraint
إذاwhen خَطَرَتْcrosses ملاحتُهُits loveliness بقلبيmy heart
جرىflows شوقاًin longing إلىfor رؤياهseeing it شانيmy tear duct
When its loveliness crosses my heart,
Whenever its glimmer crossed my heart
my tears flow in longing to behold it.
Yearning flowed to see it again
إذِwhen البيضُfair-skinned women الحِسانُbeautiful إليَّtoward me مِيلٌinclined
وإذْand when وَصْلُunion with الغوانيlovely women فيin زمانيmy days
When fair-skinned beauties inclined toward me,
For the beautiful white women incline toward me
and when my days held union with lovely women,
And the appointment of love in my time
وَإذْand when أُمسيI enter evening وأُصبحُand I enter morning كلَّevery يومٍday
علىamid عُقَبِthe successive turns of الحوادثِevents فيin أمانِsafety
and when, each day, I reached evening and morning,
And I would spend my night and wake
safe amid the turns of fortune.
At the heels of events in safety
زمانٌa time كانthere were لِيfor me فيهin it صِحابٌcompanions
كرامٌnoble منof بنيthe sons of عبدAbd المُدانِal-Mudan
A time when I had companions,
An era that had loyal friends for me
noble men of Banu Abd al-Mudan,
Generous men from the tribe of Abd al-Mudan
مِنَamong النَّفَرِthe men الّذينwho أبَوْاrefused إبائيmy refusal
وقادواand led فيin أزِمَّتِهمْtheir reins جِرانيmy neck
among the men who would not accept my refusal,
Of the band who refused my refusal
and led my neck with their reins;
And led me during their crisis
ولفّواand entwined شملهمْtheir company بالشّمْلِwith the company منّيof mine
وكنتand I had been مداthroughout الزّمانtime بغيرwithout ثانِone to turn me aside
and entwined their company with mine,
They joined ties with me
though all my life I had been without anyone to sway me.
And I was with them without a second
ولولاand but for أنّهمْtheir being حِلْفُallies of الأعاديthe enemies
وقَوْنيthey would have shielded me منfrom عُداتيmy enemies ماwhatever عَدانيassailed me
And had they not been allies of my foes,
And had they not been the confederation of enemies
they would have shielded me from whatever my enemies inflicted on me.
And my protection from my foes that did not drive me away
يَمَسُّهُمُtouches them الأذىharm قبليbefore me ويَعْنِيand concerns
جميعَهمُall of them لعَمْرُكby your life ماwhat عَنانيconcerned me
Harm would touch them before me, and they cared—
Harm touches them before me and
all of them, by your life—about whatever concerned me.
Concerns them all - by your life, they did not drive me away
وتَلْقاهمْand you find them يؤودُهُمُburdens them اِحتياجيmy need
ولاand not يكفيهمُsuffices them لِيfor me ماwhat كفانيsufficed me
And you would find them burdened by my need,
And encountering them is indispensable to me
and, for my sake, what sufficed me did not suffice them.
And what suffices me does not suffice them
مَضَوْاthey departed لسبيلهمon their way وبقيتُand I remained فَرْداًalone
أَعضّI bite علىover فراقهمُparting from them بَنانيmy fingertips
They went their way, and I remained alone;
They left toward their path and I remained alone
I bite my fingertips at parting from them.
Biting on their loss with my eyeteeth
