What ails a curved sand ridge on al-Liwa's dune,

lying empty, with neither sheep nor a herd of camels?

Its dwelling-sites have changed, but my longing for it

    is fresh and new, unchanged.

Had its eye seen me wasted away,

the wasted one would have found solace in the wasted one.

Were it not for those who dwelt in al-Liwa's ruins,

I would find no worth in them.

Leave aside the man who lingers at abandoned camps,

asking there about those who departed.

For you will never see me questioning

what does not understand the questioner's tongue.

My two companions, do not today reproach

for his love one who will not heed you.

Do not tell me the truth about youthful passion's sins,

but soothe my heart with falsehood.

For in love, no destroyer is liable for

damages, nor is there redress against a killer.

I have said to one traveling by night toward disgrace,

lured into it by immediate pleasure:

It perishes, yet leaves behind in the tales of it

what neither perishes nor passes away.

Curb the little offspring of desire for it, and leave

the one who drinks it neat to the devourer.

    كم ظامئٍ أحمدُ من ناهلِ

    And do not approach its pools to drink;

many a thirsty man is more praiseworthy than a drinker.

Were it not for praise whose remembrance endures,

the learned would gain no justice against the ignorant.

Fakhr al-Mulk has done me a favor

too great for my shoulders to bear.

No thought ever brought it to mind,

nor did any hopeful man's hope attain it.

Whenever I speak at length of it in praise,

    I am utterly absorbed.

It is as though whoever proclaimed it had poured out

a load of perfume in the crowded assembly.

You are the one who gives without a promise,

and leaves promising to the procrastinator.

How many a fettered man your hand has rescued,

a captive—and how many obscure men you have brought to notice!

And the realm, but for you, O its pride,

would have been nothing but the deceiver's prey.

What a stand you made in its defense,

as it leaned upon a crumbling structure!

He is the sun, except that in the darkness

no screen hides him from your sight.

He is hoped for and feared, like the sea in

devastating death and bounty that reaches others.

He admits no jest into his earnestness,

ever, nor mingles truth with falsehood.

To him, from among humankind's hearts, was driven

every stubborn one that grudged its steps.

And with bounty he captured such affection from them

as the trapper's net could never catch.

His favors taught people to thank him,

and gratitude is prompted by the giver.

May time never oppress you, and may you ever remain

in a well-peopled dwelling amid its blessings.

Enjoy this festival, and take its good fortune

in the current year and the coming one.

    ترفُلُ فيهنّ مع الرّافلِ

    Its garments wear out and are renewed;

you trail them proudly with those who trail their robes.

Sacrifice the enemies, and put them

in place of that untended livestock.

And may we never be deprived of that in you

    which we behold—your all-embracing splendor.
