قلتُI said وقدand already لاحappeared بريقُthe gleam of الدُّجىnight’s darkness
مَنْwho رَصّعstudded الظّلماءَthe darkness بالعسجدِwith gold
I said, as the gleam of night appeared:
Who has studded the darkness with gold?
كأنّهas though it يخفقflutters ريحٌa wind علىupon
رابيةٍa hill تلعبplays بالمِطْرَدِwith the spear
It flutters like a wind upon
A hill, playing with a spear.
هديتنيyou guided me الطُّرْقَthe paths ولوand had لمnot تُنرْyou shone
لكنتُI would have been فيin الظّلماءthe darkness لاnot أهتدِيI find my way
You guided me along the paths—and had you not shone,
I would have been in the darkness, unable to find my way.
كأنّهas though it سَيفٌa sword ولكنّهbut it
طوعُobedient to بنانِthe fingertips of المُخرِجِthe one who draws it المغمدِthe one who sheathes it
It is like a sword, yet it
Obeys the fingertips of the one who draws and sheathes it.
