We have accepted delay in place of your promises,

and an impossible promise in place of your bounty.

Your love has made us content, though we thirst

for a draught of clear water, with every mirage.

Unending estrangement from you has made us forget—

and long separation—the days of union.

You were the visitor who came to me at evening,

and if the forenoon barred you, then into my shade.

Until the talebearers turned you away from us,

so we are visited only in dreams.

How long will you keep asking, when I have

no excuse, as days pass, for growing weary?

The most wretched of people is one who, morning and evening,

cares in love for someone who does not care.

And my white hairs startled fair women,

so they severed the ties from my cords.

They laid the blame on me, as though I

had brought the harm of gray hair upon my beauty.

Yet gray hair is not my doing, for me to be blamed,

nor is restoring youth within my power.

And I do not forget the evening of the day at Jamʿ,

while we gathered our scattered saddles,

when the dusky riding camels stood hobbled

in Mina's valley by the hand of weariness.

Women of the Banu Thuʿal ibn ʿAmr

struck the hearts of men there.

They went out unveiled to al-Muḥaṣṣab,

while night's neck was adorned with Orion.

They walked swaying among us where the pebbles fall,

    like sand-serpents you have startled.

May the Lord of the House bless them on our behalf,

and days with them, without nights.

May God water al-Munaqqā, that dwelling place,

and the acacias and wild lote trees it holds.

How many a brief span of time I had there

with the one I love, and long hours!

And men who raced in every season,

unbridled, toward the heights of perfection,

with steadfast hearts whenever they made war,

and swift right hands and feet.

They paid dearly in generosity and warfare alike,

yet were not cheated by the price of high honors.

Full moons: if you travel with them in night's stillness,

then safety from losing your way is in your hand.

    Their sword-belts are hung

on the shoulder of each long-limbed, towering man.

They protected my flock from harm,

and drove security to graze in my camp.

And they aided me, when despair was all I had,

with their support against the calamities of the nights.

As though among them I were guarded by a man of loyal honor,

who parries the points of lofty spears away from you.

His protective zeal calls him, and he leaps

as arrows spring from every far-shooting archer.

And an ally who plied me with fouled, bitter water

in return for the sweet, clear water I give him.

A coward, who wants peace only

when he is afraid to fight me.

I see in his face the water of friendship,

and in his entrails the fire of mutual loathing.

He rivals me in height, but above him I am raised

by the high ridges of my firmly rooted mountains.

So tell the man who says he will match my stride,

while his right hand falls short of my reach:

Make clear to me: where is your drizzle beside my torrents,

and where is your land's low ground beside my summits?

How can one be ranked with me who possesses

none of my qualities for the seeker of glory?

His right hand begrudges even the little it holds,

and I am generous to petitioners with all my wealth.

    His promise never reaches fulfillment,

and my bounty always precedes my promised time.

Have you not seen that I follow my former self,

and, if I copy, copy my own example?

I don the darkness as armor while night lies hidden,

and ride the crest of tremendous calamity.

I uncover the inner truth of the obscured affair,

and rise like the crescent in the month's last dark nights.

With guarded honor that I do not give away,

and freely spent wealth that I do not withhold.

Ask the champions about me on the day of Salʿ,

while death's torrent pours from unbound spouts.

When the black dust congealed into night,

you saw the spearheads in it like lamp-wicks.

The press of bodies had cast down every spear,

so thrusting was done only with blades.

Was I not there the first of them to strike,

and their best healer of whoever bore a stubborn ill?

Look again; perhaps you will see them

    with disheveled forelocks, like she-ghouls.

You imagine in them, while war's cauldron boils,

from their leaping, a touch of madness.

    طلاها اليومَ بالقَطِرانِ طالي

    And their hides do stream with blood;

a dauber has coated them with tar today.

And on their backs are the sons of death,

when they clash, and the sons of battle.

So a tormented heart meets its end,

harmed by the manifold arts of delay.
