And been protected from the pitfalls of time
and kept far from death's visitations.

And still you are, in all that's sought
of glory, above the peaks and the hump.
Supreme over the lofty heights

May you be congratulated on the feast—a feast of good fortune,
You made the Feast of Ascent a celebration
of thwarting the envier and humbling the rival.
Despite the envy of enviers and plotters

Among people, except the sleepers

You pass around the cups of death as
You make death-cups rotate
cupbearers pass around the cups of wine.
As water-bearers rotate cups of wine

thick-legged and full of girth;
Sturdy of foot and secure of belt

Lofty and son of tumultuous seas

Generous! But they spent their wealth freely in generosity
of their wealth that they have put the generous to shame.
I love you with the love of souls for life

I love you as souls love life,

and as one loves healing amid sickness.

whom you have tested in momentous affairs.

As though I were your spearhead on the day of spear combat,
And my tongue your sword in altercation
and your tongue's keen edge on the day of dispute.
And if you struck once with vengeance

I would show you, with my hand, how I take vengeance.

So take it: how many words, though brief,
Have sufficed, sparing us lengthy oration?
have spared us lengthy speech!

Or a scent of sweet wine
or else a fragrance of wine.

As ostriches’ fragrance circulates
as roaming ostriches trot.
So do not listen if you hear mediocre poetry
فلاso do not تستمعْyou listen إنْif سَمعتَyou hear القريضَpoetry
فلا تستمعْ إنْ سَمعتَ القريضَ
سِوىexcept ماwhat أنظّمهُI weave it into verse منof كلاميmy words

So do not listen, when you hear poetry,
Other than what I have composed in my words
except to the verse I weave from my own words.
