O ruins of the tribe at Dhat al-Naqa,

Who kept my eyes awake, or made them sleepless?

The time has come—though deprivation of union with you

is my lot—that I be given gifts and provided for.

How often, in loving you, my eye has seen

a radiant face, its light shining!

It is fitting, since its beauty was seen

by my eye, that I should love and be enamored.

How often love has grown threadbare! Yet my love for you

has neither frayed with time nor worn out.

The dream-phantom has visited by night, though it was not

expected to come or visit by night.

How many a broad desert plain it crossed toward us,

and how many a bare, level waste it traversed toward us!

Wastelands that, had a male ostrich crossed them

traveling by night to us, would have exhausted the ostrich.

yet it left me disappointed and thwarted.

I long for the night to last, just as

I fear that morning's whiteness will shine forth.

I spent the night captive in the right hand of wishes,

afraid that I might be cured of my sickness,

and enslaved by passion, out of tenderness,

one who fears for all time that he might be freed.

Then say to whoever brought me news of what

I desire: 'May pouring, abundant rain water you!

May no tooth be broken in your mouth, and may you be spared

thirsting for a draught and choking on it!'

    فجنّب اللّهُ الّذي يُتَّقى

    I had feared my death would come before it;

so God averted what was feared.

So praise be to God for what He averted,

and thanks be to God for what He guarded against.

And do not fear Time except when

you are most at ease with it, most trusting.

It annihilated the Yemenis—how often they built

a palace, and how often they raised a pavilion for us!

If an age has raised a people high,

then it is the very one that cast down whoever soared.

And whoever was cast down upon his head wished,

after his ascent, that he had never risen.

O you, pleased yesterday with a people,

how have you become so angered and enraged?

And you who tear apart a seam you once mended,

and rend it before it has grown threadbare!

    Whoever takes back all that

he gave is nothing but a frivolous, bungling fool.
