She visited us after the hush of night; and sometimes

One whose visit we do not expect comes to us.

Ah, what a day—you drove its daylight far away!

It did not pass me by until I welcomed its darkness.

And what a lovesick man, who loathes his pleasant waking,

And loves his sleep for what sleep has brought!

And what a willing giver of his sweet embrace at nightfall,

And how often he denied lovers his speech in the morning!

So if it was not real, a lovesick man nevertheless spent the night

Treating his sickness with those illusions.

So how dear he is, offering me what is lawful of him,

And through that giving, ransoming from me what is forbidden of him!

And what a meeting, sweet to taste—and beneath it—

It would not be content for me until I had earned its punishment for sin.

And it has no fault except the nearness of its passing,

Though a yearning lover wanted it to endure.
