I hope to live, yet between me and living

as I desire stand vast decrees of fate.

And is there any escape for me amid the nights,

while lions of death lie crouching around me?

And indeed, you have lent joy in this world,

so do not despair when the loan is repaid.

And be like those who passed away and left behind

a tale whose bloom no gardens can rival.

They rebuked their souls and turned

their reins toward piety, and tamed them.

As for their nobility, they have souls

that are sound, and bodies that are ailing.
