If the red earth has hidden you away,
If the red soil has hidden you
And you have settled in a barren waste where no visitors visit you,
And you have become a visitor no visitors frequent

Then I grieved over parting with you, after
They ignorantly thought I could endure without you.
They thought I was ignorant to patiently bear it

So the fire in my sides, kindled by sorrow
And water drips from my eyes in grief.
And the water from my eyes, drips with sadness

How many bright and radiant ones in the soil
In the hands of effacing forces—or a luminous brow;
With soft hands or shining foreheads

And one crowned, one necklaced, and one adorned with bracelets.
Crowned and garlanded and honoured

The noble mounts of night journeys have wearied under death's pursuit,
The stellar nobles wearied seeking glory
And the strides of Mehri camels, and slender steeds.
And the skilled were exhausted, and the vigorous horses slowed

And the people passed away, their fates overtaking them
One choked with grief, one embittered, one left bereft;
So some smiled, some frowned, some looked miserable

And some met what they never feared would destroy them
And one left alone, one taken early, and one delayed.
While some went early and some went late

As if a gust were wrapping them in its wings
Chaff buffeted by a fierce, howling wind.
The whistling, chirping sparrow

A daring fighter in battle's thick would have escaped death,
And death's paths would be barred from its doors
And the lion in its lair would have stepped past death.
As they were barred against Chosroes and Caesar

And he whom Nizār bore would have dwelt in invincible protection
By Kisra, and Caesar would have turned away from death.

And those born of Nizar would have been in sanctuary
But he passed willingly into death's hand
From it, as would Himyar, repeller of great calamity.
No longer inhabiting castles or walking proudly

And I have lost one group after another
From us and went into the earth, a bearer of news?
It pleases me to have no group

My family and my people, selecting and choosing.

And one whose garments lance-thrusts dyed safflower-red,
Another, if not for fate's decree, would drip
Who had never once dyed his clothing with safflower;
Stars upon us, who never shone so bright

Among us the stars, and he would not have been cast down;
That was not wont to such red soil

And one laid in the dust, whose heart the spearhead entered,
Those who passed were the best of travellers
Whom the red earth had never known.
Of those who stayed, none surpassed the rest

Take the fruits of life, which are
Are more numerous than those who stayed and whom I have not lost.
No more than a fleeting glimpse

Take from life with your fingertips, for it is but
Leave off hoarding, which only weighs down
A passing cloud, dispersing and receding.

And leave abundance aside, for on its cares
Life's shadow on the youth
The heaping of gold upon gold is squandered.
Is a shadow that deserted him in exile

And life's shade over a man is like
No day of the youth in time is pure white
A shade a noonday traveler comes upon in the midday heat.
With red death looming behind

No man has a white day in this world,
And for those you see dwelling comfortably in their castles
With red death behind it, against his will.

And for the one you see dwelling in his palace,
For my father Al-Fatḥ, who hunted glory,
In luxury, these grave-pits are being dug.
Tears of sorrow flow from my eyelids

And for Abu al-Fath, whom death hunted down,
He was a joyous companion,
The water of sorrow streams from my eye.
Now he gives grave advice

Once in him I had a companion who brought joy;
If not for our shared origin and Rome
Now in him I have an admonisher who reminds me.
There is the sanctity of manners between us

If he was not of my stock and lineage,
Or if the Arabs bore no relation to you
Yet the sacred bond of letters gives us a shared lineage.
Those who mastered the language guided you

Or if the Arabs had no part in your birth,
It did not harm one the non-Arabs nursed
Those who inflect their speech correctly were enlightened through you.
Whose upbringing was in Arabic ways

وَلَديهِ آدابُ الأعاربِ تُسطَرُ
A man descended from non-Arabs suffers no harm at all,
Yet we have Arabs of pure descent you see
With the learning of the Arabs written down in his keeping.
Blinded to grammatical declension
وَلَكَمْand how many لَناamong us عُربُArabs by الأصولِdescent تراهُمُyou see them

عُمْياً عَنِ الإِعرابِ لم يَستَبصِروا
And how many among us are Arab by descent, whom you see
And I feared our friendship torn apart
Blind to grammatical inflection, never gaining insight!
By stinginess, and what I feared occurred
وَلَقدand indeed حذرتُI feared منof التفرّقseparation بينناbetween us
وَلَقد حذرتُ من التفرّق بيننا
شُحّاًout of attachment عَليكto you فَجاءنيso came to me ماwhat أحذرُI fear
شُحّاً عَليك فَجاءني ما أحذرُ
I indeed feared the separation between us,
I hoarded you against the days
Loath to lose you—and what I feared has come to me.
If only a man could keep what he stores

لَوif only كانَcould يَبقىremain لِلفَتىfor a man ماwhat يذخرُhe stores
لَو كانَ يَبقى لِلفَتى ما يذخرُ
And from you I laid up a precious treasure against time,
After you I shrugged off those at ease
If only what a man stores could remain his.
Too slothful to rival your virtue

وَنَفضتُ بعدك راحتي من معشرٍ
لوif سابقوكthey raced you إلىtoward الفضيلةِvirtue قصّرُواthey fell short
لو سابقوك إلى الفضيلةِ قصّرُوا
And after you I shook my palm free of a company
When I grieve for you, I excuse my sadness
Who, had they raced you toward virtue, would have fallen short.
When I complain, no excuse will serve
فَمَتىso whenever حَزِنتُI grieve عُذِرتُI am excused فيكover you علىfor الأسىsorrow

وإذاand when سلوتُI cease grieving فإِنّنيthen I لاnot أُعذَرُam excused
وإذا سلوتُ فإِنّني لا أُعذَرُ
Whenever I grieve, I am excused for sorrow over you;
Treachery is the consolation of a friend
But if I cease to mourn, I am not excused.

And a man's forgetting his intimate friend is betrayal
I saw you quench the fires of my passion
After death; and one like me does not betray.
Which make me pour out what I write
وَلَقدand indeed رَأيتكI saw you مطفئاًquenching منsome of لوعتِيmy anguish

I have indeed seen you quenching some of my anguish,
So boast of it dead, for how many groups
While grief dictates from itself what I set down.

Words which the old mimic the young with
Has glory in a grave after being buried!

Words that lend gray hair the robes of youth,
You were a paragon for every anthology
So that, delighted by them, they seem never to have grown old.

Pure without any murkiness marring your clarity
It travels on people's lips and is carried onward.

It is clear, with no murk to mar its clarity,
As if amid past sayings you dawned
While poetry is clear at times and muddied at others.

A moon appearing more radiant amid the darkness.
And every polished cheek of ours is raised

So every eye among us looks toward it,
And your Lord gives you the water of every cloud
And every neck among us bends toward it.
That approaches as the rain clouds gather and rain

And may your Lord water you with every cloud's rain,
And when your enemies avoid you like a roaring flood
That pours when clouds falter, and rains.
The evening rain fills your grave like a torrent

And if the foes fold a towering cloud away from you,
As if it and the lightning vie in illumination
A towering cloud will reach your earth at evening.

And if you departed bearing a fault, it was to Him who
Erases the sins of whomever He wills, and forgives.
