لاmay not قَضىdecree اللَّهGod لِقَلبيfor my heart
لا قَضى اللَّه لِقَلبي
فيin الهَوىlove أَنthat يَستَريحاit should rest
في الهَوى أَن يَستَريحا
May God never decree for my heart
May God not decree for my heart
that it find rest in love.
that it should find rest in love.
أَناI راضٍcontent مِنfrom; through هَوىlove البيthe fair-skinned women (first part)
أَنا راضٍ مِن هَوى البي
ضِthe fair-skinned women (completion) بأنthat; in that كانit was قريحاwounded
ضِ بأن كان قريحا
I am content, in loving the fair,
I am content, through love of fair-skinned women,
that it should be wounded.
that my heart should be wounded.
ياO ميلحَlovely الوَجهِthe face لِمْwhy تصْyou do (first part)
يا ميلحَ الوَجهِ لِمْ تصْ
نعُyou do (completion) ماwhat ليسَis not مَليحاlovely
نعُ ما ليسَ مَليحا
O fair-faced one, why do you
O lovely-faced one, why do you
do what is not fair?
do what is not lovely?
إنّماonly يُعذِرُhas an excuse فيfor التّقugly conduct (first part)
إنّما يُعذِرُ في التّق
بيحِugly conduct (completion) منone who كانwas قبيحاugly
بيحِ من كان قبيحا
Only in doing what is ugly may one be excused
An excuse for ugly conduct belongs only
if one is ugly oneself.

أناI مُشفٍnear death منfrom تَجنّيunjust treatment
أنا مُشفٍ من تَجنّي
كَyour وقدand indeed كنتُI was صحيحاhealthy
كَ وقد كنتُ صحيحا
I am at death’s door from your cruelty,
I am near death from the unjust treatment
though once I was sound.
you inflict, though once I was healthy.
والّذيby Him who صيّرَmade منfrom حبlove
والّذي صيّرَ من حب
بِكَof you (completes 'love of you') فيin جسمِيَmy body روحاa spirit
بِكَ في جسمِيَ روحا
By Him who made of love for you
By Him who made, from love
a soul within my body,
of you, a spirit within my body,
لاmay not أطاعَobey القلبُthe heart مِنِّيof mine
لا أطاعَ القلبُ مِنِّي
أبداًever فيكconcerning you نصيحاan adviser
أبداً فيك نصيحا
may this heart of mine never obey
may this heart of mine not heed
anyone who counsels me against you.
any adviser concerning you, ever.
