أمنتُI became safe حذاريmy fear منكُمُof you وكُفيتُكمْand I was spared you
وَأَنتمwhile you بمنّby the grace of اللَّهGod وَسْطَamid المحاذِرِperils
I am free of my fear of you, and have been spared you.
I have been wary of you all and kept you at bay,
While you, by God's grace, are amid perils.
While you are under God's protection amidst perils.
فَماso there is no لكُمُfor you عنديin my eyes وقدand indeed عشتُI lived برهةًa while
أخافكُمُI fear you بغياًunjust aggression عليَّagainst me بعاذِرِone who excuses
So you have, in my eyes—for I lived a while
So why should you be of concern to me, when I have lived serenely,
fearing your unjust aggression against me—no one to excuse you.
Fearing your malice towards me on false pretexts?
فَلاso do not تَأمنواfeel safe إنْif كنتُمُyou were قدalready أمِنتُمُyou became safe
سهامَarrows الأعاديthe foes منfrom سهامِthe arrows of المقادِرِthe decrees of fate
So do not feel safe—even if you have escaped
So do not feel secure, if you have felt secure,
the arrows of foes—from the arrows of fate.
From the arrows of enemies and arrows of fate.
وَكَمand how often ذاthis (emphatic) نَفضتُI shook الكفّthe hand منfrom نَصرhelp أُسرتيmy family
عَلىin خُطّةٍan undertaking خشناءَharsh واللَّهُwhile God ناصريmy helper
And how often I have shaken my hand free of my family's help,
And how often have I shaken my fist in triumph over my clan's foes
in a harsh undertaking, with God as my helper.
In rugged battle, while God is my helper!
وَكَمand how often ذاthis (emphatic) خَشيتُI feared الأمرَthe matter قبلَbefore هجومِهِits onslaught
وسُرْبِلتُهand I was clothed in it كُرْهاًunwillingly فلمyet did not يكُbe ضائرِيharmful to me
And how often I feared a matter before its onslaught,
And how often have I dreaded a matter before its onslaught,
and was clothed in it against my will, yet it did me no harm.
And clad it perforce in fine robes, and it harmed me not!
