Ah, would that a life now gone from you at al-Ḥimā

would return, though nothing past has returned to you!

And O our visitor, when you bestowed a visit,

you bestowed it late at night, while we slept.

Unawares, slumber came, sending him to us,

without an appointment, while the visitors lay motionless.

So welcome to the night visitor after a spell of sleep!

Dreams find comfort in him, though he is far away.

And he taught me how impossible it is to meet him—

and how could there be a meeting, when meeting is arduous?

And we are but captives of nothingness,

yet in our slumber, we take that for existence.
